9-5 with lunch paid.

I went from working at big defense firm and skipping lunch to leave at a normal time to working in a Plaintiffs firm with my lunch paid. The impact it has had on my day is immense.

I don't miss the billable hours at all! Went from having bad dreams about time entries, to running to the bathroom so I could get back to billing, skipping lunch to keep up with the demand. I was completely miserable.

Working in a Plaintiffs firm has changed my life for the better. 100%

That’s why I love in house life. I have no billables and no one is policing my time, when I come and go, when I eat, when I take personal calls, etc. I just need to stay on top of my work and be available for the business units that I support.

Yesterday I had meetings all morning and then shot down to my office gym at 12:15 and did a 3mi run til 1pm, showered, and then had a meeting once I got back up during which our office admin brought my DoorDash to my office. I ate while working and finished up for the day at 5:30pm.

WFH today and have one meeting at 8:30am, then bringing my kids to school, then have a clear calendar to get ahead of my workload before the holiday. I plan on picking my kids after school and running 10k during lunch.

My days are absolutely packed between work and meetings but I worked a few late nights last week so my boss told me to check out early on Friday so I did.

I got what I needed to get done done, and had a couple unplanned meetings I had to handle. But actually got to go get coffee with my wife midday (while the kids napped with grandma), worked out for an hour, and spent time with my family.

I agree-billable hour requirements are a bear to meet, when you have other non-BH activities to keep up with (meetings, CE’s, admin, lunch)—so much better in a PL firm, still stressful but much better than killing yourself to meet BH requirements!

Marketer at a boutique litigation firm here (mostly defense, some plaintiff side, for corporates). Sole marketer for 45 attorneys, doing media/comms, digital (web, socials), events and sponsorships, awards and rankings submissions, CRM, and RFPs/proposals. Working myself to death at 60 hours a week plus 2-hour commute. I take my lunch at 4 pm sometimes which signals I'll be in the office again until midnight or 1 am (I leave hours even after the cleaners come and go). Commute 2 hours a day 3 days a week (sometimes 4 days a week, depending on what's going on).

Was looking forward to 5-days off in a row over Thanksgiving. Then a big corporate client decided to launch an RFP yesterday because they got served a week before, and the deadline is Monday (instead of just assigning it to one of the firms on their roster, they want us to bid for the work in a reverse auction, then make up their mind and then do the strategy and response to the suit). And I was given a heads up the day before about yet another RFP that will be sent soon, and I had one that was due one week ago which I spent most of the prior weekend on. No assistant (though I've said that this isn't sustainable). I was earning better pay working slightly less hours at BigLaw. The whole point of this role was better balance, but that balance is for others apparently, not for me. I won't make it to my 50th birthday in 6 months at this rate.

Wow—my advice (nurse here!) is that your physical and mental health aren’t worth sacrificing at the altar of work—if you really want to stay, advocate for an assistant (non-negotiable!) or find another position with better work-life balance ( WFH/shorter commute, serve lesser number of atty’s, assistant, etc.) You can always roll your 401k over when you leave.

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

I have a partner that calls me multiple times a day to talk about updates on our cases. Sometimes just to ask “anything to update me on?” He’s known across all of the associates for doing this. Most of the calls repeat information I’ve already provided in emails to him or the client. I normally bill this time as “strategize on” or “consider XYZ in further of” and it keeps getting appealed. Any advice?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
