Not all networking attempts are beneficial—you reached out, the cd passed you along, it didn’t work out.
For now, I’d leave it as a thank you. Asking for another favor and unfortunately you start to become a chore. If this cd liked your book, other cd’s will too—reach out to them
Do you mean, ask if he or she would recommend you to other agencies? You should be prepared to be specific about “building your network“ because that’s a pretty broad ask… But I think it’s perfectly reasonable for you to ask this CD if they would recommend you elsewhere

That or even just to a point if a few intro emails. Hey here’s x copywriter he really likes the small to medium agency scene and wants to connect with creatives. Technically I don’t know how I can be recommended without having worked with someone.

“Hey, your agency sucks. But you don’t! Reaching out to see if you know a guy who knows a guy who can deliver (unlike your agency). Cheers!” On second thought… don’t listen to me.

I’d connect with them on LinkedIn and stay in touch.

Totally get your point of view. He does volunteer his time as a teacher so he does like to help young creatives but I don’t won’t to be a pest as you said.
Connect on LinkedIn. Tell them you appreciate their help. Tell them you’d like to stay in touch.
Like in dating, you need to play it a little cool.
Yes as the others have said, reach out on LinkedIn, or if you have his email or are on a text basis with him or her, just shoot a quick note and say something along the lines of hey thanks so much for recommending me and passing my work on etc. etc. whatever the person did, I’d love to stay in touch and if you ever hear of anyone looking at my level, feel free to let me know or pass me along to them. I didn’t write that very well but you know what I mean, putting myself in the CD shoes if I really liked a young creatives work enough to recommend them and stick my neck out, I would certainly be OK passing them on to my contacts in the industry
I’d be direct - thank them for the opportunity, say you are still looking for a role and if they know any CDs who might also like your book you’d appreciate an introduction. And then don’t push it.
Honestly most people are happy to help and busy, I prefer when juniors get to the point quickly.
Just do it! If the CD is a decent person there should be no issues. If the CD balks at it, cut bait, not worth your anguish. We got help coming up and we owe it to you, to pay it forward.
