It always has been a sweatshop. The difference was you made actual creative ideas before instead of having to concept Cannes-worthy 360 social activations for tomorrows 8am client pow wow where they kill them all and just dictate a tweet to you instead.
If you just look at earnings historically, we’re one of the few industries who do way more and get paid way less than we used to. Agencies can thank themselves for racing eachother to the bottom, and charging per head hour vs for the service provided.
How do you make up for diminishing returns? You gotta sell more head hours. More teams working on the same projects, doing less work.
More roles and experts, strategy, digital, social etc etc. And keep them working for more than 40 hours a week.
Why? The agency charges the client for overtime, but don’t pass this on to the employee, making overtime work extremely profitable. Under normal hours they pay an employee $100 per hour, and charges the client $150. During overtime, they charge the client $150, and keep it all to themselves.
Always. Since the dawn of time(sheets). And award shows.
It’s absolutely getting worse
It used to be more work hard, play hard imo. Now it’s just work hard.

Long hours and weekends since the dawn of time BUT there was also a lot of fun opportunities to offset it… Big budget shoots and all their trappings, and production company/post house/industry parties every 3 weeks.
Now it’s just the work… and “all work and no play makes Jonny” want to grab an axe.
It’s way worse because of email, laptops, and phones.
My first job (not that long ago) we had desktops and no email on phones so when you went home there was no more working.
Now, in part due to the pandemic, we all live at work and work at home so there’s no end.
We go through rounds and rounds and rounds of changes and feedback and everyone is working in the deck at the same time across time zones and the deadlines are shorter and shorter.
It’s chaos.
Always and forever. This is not for the faint of heart 😔
