My $0.20: be honest and up front about your interest in the job. After that if, you were good friends, then you can go proceed casually and catch up on things. It looks phony when someone starts with platitudes and then has a business related ask. Plus if she is a C-level executive it saves time by getting to the point. There is nothing worse than wasting an exec’s time. She would probably appreciate you taking that into consideration. Hope this helps.

Schedule a coffee chat/catch up
Have prepared a super brief statement on the fact that you’ve thought about working there for a bit (so it doesn’t seem opportunistic. Ask if she has any contacts that would be willing to meet with you to discuss the types of opportunities there. Then ask the person you meet with if they know anybody who would be willing to do the same. Follow up with all of them and leave a great impression.
Hey xxx, I saw your company is hiring for a position I found very interesting, I’d love to chat with you about the role to get more information . Keep it casual! Assuming you were a good teammate with her prior
This is very helpful. Thank you so much for this.
“Hey xxxx,
Great to see you’re doing well at company Y.
Noticed an interesting role over there and would love to catch up and chat about it. Let me know if you’re open and I can coordinate calendars.”
I don't beat around the bush. I am too straightforward and sometimes people I know liked me for that. What I am trying to say is that people don't like people who obviously need something yet still trying to make a subtle approach or impression. Go straight to the point. If he/she will help you, then that's good. If not, at least you did not waste your precious time.
If she's very very senior, you might want to practice how to speak up loudly so she can hear. A speaker or megaphone may be too much, but I'd see if you could (discreetly) find out how much heading loss she's had; don't want her to get embarrassed/triggered. Also as you get very senior, the ability to enunciate goes down as well. Probably want to bone up on lip reading to avoid being impolite and asking her to repeat everything she says.
For goodwill, I would bring along some prune juice, Werther's Original, and a tin of Royal Dansk butter cookies.
Lol what
I wouldn’t be offended at all if a former colleague contacted me for an in and was straight up about it. I’ll either offer help or not depending on if I want my name attached to their performance if they’re hired.
Be casual and honest. Tell her that you want to apply. It's up to her whether she will do something about it or not. But you can always go through the regular process.
