Just make sure you communicate with each other. Try to plan events together in the community to get your names out there.
I’m doing this with another attorney right now. We have just started referring all the calls in the others subject area to them. We also try to do a monthly lunch.
If you hear from potential clients who would benefit better from the other one's services, then you could always pass along each other's info. What areas of law do you work in? Are there any events you could sponsor within the community together to help get your names out there?
Join organizations that have a variety of potential clients in them, as well as other lawyers. You will inevitability get asked if you handle or can refer in your friend’s practice area.
As others have said, co-sponsoring events is also a good strategy.
Yes I am. For my own practice area, which is sort of niche, I am in organizations that primarily consist of other lawyers (Inns of Court, minority bar orgs, etc.). Outside of that, I am involved in the cycling community and a couple of nonprofits. Being out and around other humans, over time, invariably leads to referrals for me and the colleagues I want to see thrive. I’m in the SF Bay Area.
A friend of mine is a more specific example. She is heavily involved in the food scene. Restaurant associations and food nonprofits. These feed her practice (employment defense) as well as her colleagues through direct referrals of new clients and cross referrals of existing ones.
This is a repeatable process. Pick an industry or type of client you are interested in, and go socialize with them.
