A mentor told me job searching later in a career requires a different mindset, and I’m wondering if that’s part of what’s holding me back in my career search now. How has your approach evolved over time for more senior roles?

A couple of thoughts:
- in the current ecosystem of mass applications and ATS’s, referrals are important to even get a look regardless of level.
- as you become more senior, showing measurable / impactful business outcomes and the ability to navigate cross-functional teams becomes more important than the tangible / technical skills. That can be harder to show, but is an important change that happens.
- hiring happens out of pain. Being able to show that you’ve solved similar problems with similar companies often becomes a key measuring stick. Grounding your experience as being significantly similar from a type of company or type of problem can be a huge unlock at the senior levels

Getting close to retirement and in a job hunt now, I'm paying more attention to changes in the industry regarding AI and other tech advances, knowing as much information about a potential employer before applying, reaching out or building up my network, using AI to assist with the job searches or refining a resume, or even using AI to refine bullet statements for an application. Lastly, get involved in social media. It doesn't mean that you have to start up a youtube channel or reply or comment to social media posts, but pay attention to what people are asking or commenting. If you read through the questions and comments here on the GlassDoor Bowls, there is many good and informative postings and comments, but obviously ignore the trolls lol.

I just let recruiters message me and do keyword based resume writing and wait. I haven't looked for a job since 2015, they all find me.

I have had a long career as an analyst, which is a skill of the crosses all industries for most of us, and I’m later on in my career and adjusting. I find that if I describe myself as a senior professional with experiences all over the sector before I go into my individual talents whether it’s with a recruiter or an interview, it’s helpful.

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?
