A recruiter reached out about a finance role that looked promising. But before even scheduling a first interview, they asked me to complete a full case study, build out a spreadsheet model, and create a PowerPoint deck. No compensation, no guarantee I’d even get a phone screen. Part of me feels like it’s a total red flag, but another part worries I’ll lose out if I don’t play along. Would you do the work to stay in the running?

I used to work for an org that starting doing this as part of their hiring process. And most of the time, they used especially good answers to the case studies and apply them to their own business strategy. Not saying that’s the case here. But sometimes, it’s cheaper than hiring labor or bringing in interns to get fresh ideas. I’d steer clear of anything like this.

I had to do an assessment prior to being interviewed for a role recently. It took 2 hours, wasn’t terrible. I got the offer.

If you have nothing else to do, and are capable of completing the work, why not? If you are currently employed and don’t have the time on your hands to do it, then pass…

"I estimate this to take me X hours and would be happy to complete this by Thursday at my hourly rate of $X, paid 50% in advance." They might be legit, but how many jobs could you apply for during the time it would take you to do that project?

Hard no and name and shame them later so that they are thought a lesson

No

Hard no. When I was hiring for an analyst at an old job, leadership wanted me to do that as a screening tool. GTFOOH.

Could be a way of whittling down from a high volume of similar applicants

I’m so grumpy about new campus hires. Sometimes I’m judgmental (your hobby is “working on your golf swing,” really?). Sometimes I’m just exhausted by the worried earnestness. I'm the only employee with a background in finance in a tech startup growing at a 300%+ per year. But it's actually my first finance-related experience (interned and now part-time as I'm in my senior year of undergrad) and don't know really how to have an impact as my knowledge is "limited" and have no technical mentorship.
