Def speak to the recruiter but don't mention what you WERE making before. If you're not working, there's no leverage and I hate when candidates say, well, I was making "x" before. Yeah, that was before when you had a job with that particular company who had a particular range for that role you had. Different company, different time and different comp range. However, if you're still working and have leverage, talk thru if there's flexibility on comp (since you have a job) and not desperate. But hey, you do what you feel is gonna land you the job and comp. Good luck!
All great points! Thank you!
Talk to the recruiter, ask them about the role and the level, and when they ask you if their salary range works for you, it's time to decide what you're willing to accept as a salary. If you're desperate to leave your current role and would take a pay cut, or there's done other really strong reason to take a pay cut, you say you're looking for a competitive offer aligned with your skills and experience and say you want to continue with the process.
If you're looking for higher pay than your current, you ask if there's flexibility in their range or leveling. They may need to hire at the next level up to meet your expectations. If they give you the signal that they're not willing to go higher than the posted range, they probably won't call you back, or you'll tell them that amount is too low for you.
Okay, that’s helpful. Gives me more to think about. Thank you. Your comment just reminded me that I’ve taken a $10k pay cut 5 yrs ago for a new role at the time that gave me a lot of growth opportunities and this situation now is very similar.
