Golden’s can be, and usually are, horrendous puppies. They chew on everything and some dig in yards and they have very high energy levels as puppies so they get bored quickly. But they’re usually easy to train and house train. Hang in there through puppyhood because they become amazing dogs once they mature (usually around 4-5 years old). I’m not saying this to scare you but to help prepare you. She will be worth it but there may be moments where you want to kill her or give her away. My mom says that God made puppies cute so that you don’t kill them.
I should also add that I LOVE goldens and, while I don’t currently have one, I will get another one, likely multiple more. I had my first golden from the age of 8 weeks old until she passed away just a month before her 14th birthday. She was the BEST dog and I would go through her horrible puppy years again in an instant if it meant that I could have had more time with her. My second golden was a rescue and it turned out that he wasn’t a golden at all, which I had suspected and the DNA test confirmed. He was a very good boy and was the perfect dog for my family so I’m glad that I ended up with my sweet lab mix instead of a golden. Love your girl and enjoy all of the moments, good and bad. They’re far too fleeting.
take your time for training, and remember that every dog is different so don’t get discouraged if it takes “longer” than expected. goldens pick up on things really fast and most times very well, right from the get go potty train and start with your commands. use excitement as rewards rather than food/treats, this helps keep them from counter surfing/begging most times in my experience. try to take at least an hour in the morning/ afternoon/ evening everyday for standard training ( sit, stay, come, learning their name ) and make sure to be touching their paws on a regular basis ( randomly hold their paws while their asleep, while their eating go over and touch them all over, put your hands in their food bowl (to ensure they don’t get food aggression) you want to ensure that in a year you will be able to trim their nails without restricting them and that they aren’t reactive when they get touched when not expecting it. lastly, make sure to expose them to everything you can while their little, better to do as a baby then as a 7 year old.
enjoy your time with you pup!
Socialization ends at about 15-16 weeks. After that window, whatever they’re spooked by / scared of will stick — take them everywhere!!! Skateboards, backfires, parking lot, buses, people with gloves and hats, busy streets, sirens, honking, thunderstorms, boxes, pots, door slams, shopping carts, elevators, automatic doors, riding in the back seat or trunk, all the things — Petco, Lowe’s are great places for most of these! Spend a little time at doggy daycare — other dogs are great teachers on what’s acceptable in the dog world, but not so often that they groove bad habits like peeing anywhere.
My lab does not like going for walks on garbage day. Seeing all the garbage bins along the sidewalk in front of every house on our street spooks her. 🤣
Lol I echo EY1, that dog is likely going to be hell on wheels. Put her in training ASAP!! And be consistent with whatever method you choose. Also they have a ton of energy- you need to make sure they get adequate exercise and tire themselves out every day. But they are the absolute cutest so you only get 30% as aggravated as you normally would if a different creature was doing these same things.
Yes! The exercise and mental stimulation is so important for goldens. They will be naughty and get into things if they’re not properly stimulated no matter how well trained they are. My parents golden is 11 and still goes to find something he’s not allowed to have if we aren’t paying enough attention to him. Be prepared for a lot of exercise and games and toys to keep them entertained!
Golden is my 5th dog. First 4 were Labradors. I LOVE ❤️ this breed. So affectionate, easy to train, needs activity, but like a lab will be your best friend. We’ve had no chewing, and no over eating- two things most of my labs struggled with. They do have lots of energy but they aren’t as impulsive as my labs.
My golden will kill rabbits 😬
You need training, too. My neighbor’s golden ate a sock and had to have surgery. But, he is just the sweetest baby.
Follow McCann Dogs for training! I trained my doodle with their YouTube videos and he’s so well socialized I can almost take him with me everywhere and he behaves very well. We didn’t have any issue with chewing and destroying things even during his teenage phase
Zoom rooms, if you have access to them!
Take her to the dog park. Get her to chase tennis balls. This breed love going after the ball and running. The dog park will also help with socialization, but be vigilant for any signs of aggression from her or other dogs (or owners 😏)
