Advice for going to your agency with a counter offer?

You need to know what you want . Are you willing to walk away? Would you take the other job? What specifically would make you stay ? Just chancing it because you feel like you suddenly have a little piece of power is likely to back fire

Based on your further explanation, I think you want and should take the other offer. Just take the plunge in the next step of your career and don't kid yourself with that bs about loyalty. You already went through the entire process of looking, applying, going to interviews and getting an offer. Take it. This counter nonsense is your residual fear talking. You can do this! P.S. If def bent on asking for counter, in addition to all of above advice, know this puts a mark on your back in your employer's eyes and leaves a bad taste in their mouth. It lets the employer know you've been looking elsewhere, not that you're loyal to them.

What they said. Don't take an offer to your agency unless you know exactly what it would take to keep you and you are 100% ready to walk if you don't get it. If you're just trying to get a raise, you only get one chance to play that card. So what if they don't budge? Now what?

likehelpful

One thing to add. Most people who accept counters leave within six months. Agencies know this and many won’t deal with the bullshit of a counter. So go into the talks humbly. Tell them you like them but it’s hard to give up that cash and job title

like

what both of the above said - at my last agency, a coworker had a dicey counter (sweatshop that did crappy work) and the agency called her bluff. it was a shitstorm. don’t dance with fire if you aren’t prepared to get burned.

All good advice - appreciate it! If my current agency doesn't match/compromise I will definitely accept the other offer; have somewhat of a loyalty to my current agency so want to give them a chance without coming off like a greedy a-hole. But the counter offer is a big bump and title change, so will absolutely accept if my current agency isn't willing to budge.

like

^ Right. And that should not require a counter. I know that's the ideal and doesn't happen that way much in real life, but it does still exist when you have a good boss and good employer. Otherwise, just take the other offer. It actually feels earned.

like

FWIW - I took a counter earlier in my career and stayed 5+ more years at the agency. Some times it is just about the money and you need to push your current employer.

like

Agreed. Getting your agency to counter won’t teach you anything.

Never ever do that

Even if they want you to stay because they have a retention problem, that is a good enough sign to leave. Doesn’t matter how great the culture is. The people you work with can still meet you outside of work but the work environment is not something you can easily change or ever change. Loyalty is not a word that exists in the relationship between an employer and employee especially in this damn industry. When it comes to layoffs it’s all about the budget and favoritism so why can’t we the individual little ones do the same when they don’t have our backs (or ever to begin with, they just need another cog in their shitshow of shits to churn out more shit). I know I sound negative and I know there are tons of talent and great work out there but agency life (the agency model) desperately needs a change.

Be prepared to leave. Not all people get a counter
