I have received an offer from PA Consulting , which I think will speed up my development by around 2 years, compared to staying where I am. (More diverse role, exposure, not just focused on one platform/product for which I currently am). In addition, the offer is also a large increase in package. I have only been at my current company for 6 months, however I would like to take the offer, how do I approach this?

Really just practice, practice, practice. There’s a few websites which will give you a bunch of practice questions in a consulting format which are worth using.

I struggle here too. Don’t underestimate the power of breaking down what you’re going to do and then taking it stepwise. That helps because even if you don’t get the math right, it’s clear you knew the steps to take and it counts for more than being a math wiz. Just structure the calcs at the very least
This. Take a few minutes to come up with your approach (3-5 steps) then explain it back to them. If they agree then go through one step at a time, if you make a mistake they should catch it and correct you. It’s more about the approach than your ability to do mental maths
Practice breaking down the same calculations in different ways to get comfortable with different shortcuts so it becomes easier to find the breakdown with least individual steps/whichever you feel more comfortable with quickly. 170 x 45 = 100×45 + half that + 10% of first step twice, or 200x45 and subtract 30×45 (30x40 + 30x5), or 170x2x2 + half of 10% of 170 etc. Practice many ways so the breakdowns become more instinctive. Also tip, if weird calculation, round one number up and one down on the side or mentally to know the right order of magnitude before the actual calculation (170x45 = 200x40) just so you dont second guess the order of magnitude at the same time as questioning the accuracy of it altogether
You can also ask ChatGPT to create worksheets of questions to help you practice. My husband does this for math problems for our son (who loves them). He just asks the chatbot to create 10 questions for practicing key stage 1 objectives and ChatGPT creates it. You can do the same for the type of math questions you want to practice.
Agree with recommendations above. But given shit job market and super intense competition, it's true that you don't need to have the mental maths 100%.BUT if you're competing with others who all got it right , then you're the first off the list, even if you spiked in other areas.
SM now - and I didn't get the math right to get the offer a few years back. But I was very pedantic when voicing my approach. All assumptions - even the more obvious ones are stated.
Good luck !
Find ways to make calculations easier, especially when calculating percentages and fractions
Keep on practicing. Drills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, long division. Percentages, fractions etc.
All about practise.
Maybe this isn’t for you?

Mental math is only one skill of many needed to pass a case interview. I’d argue that with enough prep, anyone can get better at mental math but it is expected to be bad at the initial stages so…… I know several people who received offers without getting the right number
Sure, so then OP should prepare; ask GPT for help. Not sure what the point of the post is

I think it’s the general perception around casing. I don’t think people realise that you don’t have to get math all the way right to get to the next stage. A lot of messaging around case prep makes it seem like there’s no room for error and it’s perfection or nothing but in my experience, structure, clear communication, logical thinking and strong insights win over good math
