After my divorce, I realized how little I understood my own finances. I’ve always focused on my career, but now I’m trying to rebuild savings, manage debt, and figure out what 'financial stability' even means on one income. For anyone who’s had a major life change, how did you get your financial life back on track?

Start with a financial advisor and build small, sustainable habits. You’re not alone—major life transitions often reset everything.

I had luck with a financial advisor too. There is a cost but I like knowing he’s got a handle on things and I don’t need to worry about it

Make sure you educate yourself on the basics of finances - emergency savings goals, debt paydown strategies, different types of savings (IRA, 401k, etc.), and budgeting. There are a million good resources online on these topics, and after you read a few, you’ll start seeing the common advice. As far as what “financial stability” means, that’s a very personal and individualized definition for each person, but is definitely viable on one income.

There’s a very good book I recommend called I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi. It has sooo much good information and easy to follow steps.

Educate yourself. Books and podcasts. Get good with money by Tiffany aliche is another. I got really into personal finance after law school but especially when I got laid off. Now I’m into FIRE and at 1.5m. You can always change and get better!

For >20 YOE, multiple companies founded, highly technical, patents, academic papers, former F10 Director… even in a T3 city, $240k TC in consulting seems low, right? Not complaining at all just not sure what direction to go for higher comp.

Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I’m going in with an open mind but little concrete information on his entity and goals and ways I could get involved. What questions would you ask such a person?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

We have motion sensor lights in my office and the sensor is far from my desk. Consequently, if I'm on a long WebEx, the lights go out and it's embarrassing. The building won't change the sensor. Anyone find a solution for this (aside from standing up and moving, which would be very awkward)? I can't rearrange my office.
