and more than this we get discriminated and complained by unruly, arrogant and rude, half educated gen next workers who complain to HR and other senior leaders etc you get the drift
I’ve never heard the word “triggered “ or “uncomfortable” (mental form) used by so many in today’s workforce. Pay and promote but don’t expect them to produce or preserve is their message.
The dilemma is that we are worth every penny based on our decades of experience, but there’s someone greener willing to try for cheaper and the corporate bottom line drives the deal.
I would recommend considering the category of being your own boss with your skillset and work until you’re 100 if you’re so inclined. (F them all.)
I love this, but have no idea what business to start.
Get used to it. We have no protection except empty words on a page.
There is protection that makes it slightly more difficult to fire an older employee. Older hires require higher comp and raise health care costs.
Many companies spout value to get price but ignore value when hiring. I’ve noticed a number of firms have an expected comp question included in their online application.
Yep, we are now on the wrong side of 40.
LinkedIn doesn’t help with having the dates of employment. IMO, we should move away from using dates of employment on resumes - a lot of bias could be avoided. The perception of they’re too young, too old, or explaining gaps of unemployment due to layoffs, child rearing etc. Verification of employment is usually done through third party vendors, dates could be kept anonymous hopefully creating a true non biased approach.
Pics on LinkedIn don’t help either. It favors the young and good looking folks.
From an application/resume perspective, eliminate any experience more than 15-20 years ago and remove education dates. Don't forget to do the same on LinkedIn.
Yep, ageism is definitely prevalent. It's sad because there are so many talented people overlooked due to age. For a while, I was overlooked because as a woman, we are discriminated against during childbearing years, then bam! As soon as that's over, I experience ageism.
I clean shave and buzz my head, wear youthful glasses and wear neutral fitted suit with a solid coloured shirt to avoid looking too old.
It is a big issue. I get interviews and I go in front of interviewers and as they look at my greying appearance they ghost me. Forget applying for jobs, I have been ghosted after coming in with strong referrals. The people that referred me come back to with varied reasons like location, salary, experience etc
If you are getting interviews, how are you getting discriminated?
By showing up to said interview they can see your age.
I have to disagree with this. Over 50 & female, & received offers for each of the 5 positions II interviewed for. It may be more pervasive later on, just not seeing that right now.
Um yeah, cause female, companies will crawl over mines to hire women, you are a racial minority as well are you 🤣
The online application makes you put dates in there - even for education
Maybe there should be age “targets” just like some of the other attributes they discriminate on!
Hiring firms try to convey an age preference by including years of experience. I rarely see a number higher than 15.
It takes time to gain solid experience. Acquiring it faster often requires job hopping, which is the trend. Today’s strategy is a veneer of knowledge and likability.
Many older workers failed to abandon the long job tenure strategy that worked early in their careers.
D2, he said it comes after they've seen him, not before at the resume stage
Then the issue is not resume or LinkedIn. It might be how he is presenting himself.
