You should get a realtor because this bowl is tired of this question everyday
She really can’t afford it…

You could probably get a nice studio in Long Island city for ~3200-3300. A lot of nice/newer buildings there and it’s a 15 min train to midtown east and a lot of trains run through there so it’s super accessible to the rest of manhatten. Rent is obvs gonna be cheapest in the winter but moving to ny in the winter sounds like a nightmare for being able to meet people/ getting to know the city once you get here. Be prepared to have 3 months rent upon signing (security, brokers fee, 1st months rent) and money for furniture. So consider that too when deciding when to move
In this market it can be up to 4 month’s rent on hand since 15% broker’s fee
People in this chat really suggesting living in LIC, to a mid-20s kid who is moving to NYC for the first time... smh

Yea it’s obvs not as good as Manhattan, just giving an actually viable option that’s very accessible to their work/the rest of the city
A bit about me: 26F, moving from Boston and my main priorities for location are safety, quiet at night, dishwasher and laundry in unit is preferred (pls don’t roast me in the comments) and I would like to stay within 35 minutes if my midtown east office. Budget would be $3k or below, open to a studio!

It’s not even that in unit W/D is significantly more expensive, is that it’s so incredibly rare in the city that your search will be really really difficult
Are you open to roommates? At your age, I'd consider it. Great way to get access to a nice building in a good location, and also good for making friends for someone new to the city. $3k is pretty tough these days, maybe you can find something in Murray Hill, or try Yorkville.
Doubt prices are going down any time soon. If you're set on living alone, then you are going to have to sacrifice a bit on location (by going further uptown, or further towards either the east or west side of Manhattan = further away from a subway station, or further out to other boroughs), or on building/apartment size and quality.
Which is not to say that you can't find a decent studio/small 1br, in an okay building, in an okay location, for $3k. Just don't expect to be living like you're Blair Waldorf

There are other boroughs than Manhattan. Take time and research neighborhoods that align with your needs and try to stay in your top choices. Do a vibe check. Start saving now and get your paperwork in order, taxes and credit checks and fico number. Really consider what ammendies you're looking for. Greener neighborhoods and older buildings tend to stay cooler than glass condos. Face away from direct sunlight. Start saving street easy searches regularly.
It’s too early to look for an actual apartment
And with that budget, your options in Manhattan will be very limited. And doubtful you’d get washer and dryer in unit.
I live in LIC and it’s relatively quiet and really safe. Very close to midtown takes about 20min or less depending where. There’s lots of new apartments around here too. $3000 for a studio is cutting it close. I’d say at leas $3200.

It's a great place unfortunately didn't pass the vibe check. But you now have a new Hooni Kim resto called The Little Banchan Shop to check out.
Arrange to move during winter when rent is slightly cheaper
How much realistically will do that save a month?
Pointless to search unless your about a month or so out. Those places will be filled if you start looking now. Filter for requirements and then search when your 1.5 months from moving.

Love my dishwasher, but I would suggest trying to survive without the W&D in unit given your age and price point. I have one in my building which is workable for me (and I probably make 3x what you do and have kids). Paying the in-unit W&D premium (+$300-400/mo?) just isn’t worth it for me.
You can honestly get all that if you wanted to give Hoboken or Weehawken a shot
