Hi to everyone from the GenX thread!
Ageism laid bare. This is the sad reality of the business. Agency leaders who linger into their 60s, who have completely dismissed the value of their contemporaries to keep themselves afloat. Shame on you Mark Read.

Most of the large cool tech companies want individual contributors. They pigeon hole people into 1 thing and doing that 1 thing well. It’s not really good for career development if you plan on going back to advertising. You’re better off going to a start up and getting actual experience.
I’ve been pursuing start-ups in NYC like crazy and the salary drop is so significant I can’t live (and do have kids and no additional support). And absolutely no intention of going back to advertising unless it’s in a wildly different role. Don’t have the stomach for it any more. I loved it once and after 20 years in I’m done.
I'm in SF and know of a few industry people from NY who moved to SF and ultimately moved back to NY. As a foreigner myself who is now very deeply rooted in SF... I love the people but iffy on the place. So expensive, homelessness etc. Also have heard very mixed feedback about working at FB especially about getting stuck in a lane and little experience on broader industry experience.
Facebook isn’t in San Francisco. It’s in soulless Silicon Valley. Isn’t it a little late for this bs? NYC still has a soul.
NYC barely has a soul anymore, filled with the “sheeple"
I don’t know your specific discipline, but if those 2 choices are indeed the 2 routes you must choose between, you will likely find the client side choice a bit more sustainable, if less “exciting”. FB is a bit Game of Thrones and you need to have a tech space/lane that you are very good at in order to maintain value in the org. The people who go to FB & thrive probably would not be looking at the client side opportunity you mentioned. They are willing to go and WANT to go “all in/full on”.
If it’s a money decision, I’d make sure the money is as high as it ‘seems’ because the cost of living here is obscene. They should be willing to relocate you and you should feel like you’re comfortable, like the rent is easy to pay. Otherwise, go client side and relax. Facebook seems like bro culture to me. I’ve been contacted by them a dozen times in the past few years. They’ve always been too far away for me to consider but I’d be afraid of getting ‘aged out’ there, too. Client side is a much safer bet. Have them fly you out here and see how it feels.
If you’re still hungry and ambitious in your career, stay in NY. If you’re looking to check out and coast downhill toward retirement, go west.
If you’re committed to the ad circus, NYC is still the ultimate big tent in North America. But it’s a tough time and it’s not going to get better any time soon. That pressure will trickle down to salaries and already has done.
If you connect with the right client you could a part of a new vanguard or pinned into an uninspired routine
I struggle with the same issues frankly. Not convinced I can afford to retire in NYC and yes we’ll be pushed out soon enough so I’m interested to know where you land on this.
SF still has a soul, you just have to work a bit harder to find it.
I did the FB thing. I learned so so much and grew as a creative, but frankly thought it would open more doors for me back on the agency side.
