Depends. North and Central America are approved for sure. Everywhere else is a gray area. It doesnât say no. But it doesnât say yes.

Thatâs a PM call
Depends on projects. At the end of the day it is billed back to clients so has to be approved by PMO.
International is no concern, itâs a cost difference that is important
At my company you can do in lieu. So as itâs cheaper or you cover what would be left over. You can do it. So Iâm working in NC instead of flying back to PA, I can fly to SC to visit the sister.
You know this is taxable, right?
Itâs grossed up though (the variant that isnât grossed up is the one where you fly someone else out to you)
At KPMG itâs fine
Thereâs nothing wrong with booking international alt travel â Iâve done it a lot in the past when I was in a looong distance relationship. I would, however, consider:
- you arenât allowed to bill time while overseas for a non-business reason (there are tax implications) so youâll need to take your Friday off or commit fraud on your timesheet (I recommend the former)
- would the increased travel distance make it difficult to get back to client site at a reasonable time, especially if you run into delays?
- would it raise questions to the client if they happened to be looking at the itemized expenses and see you flying to an international destination?
Not trying to be discouraging, Iâm all for international alt travel (and alt travel in general), just be smart about it.
