This is an intern so they really may not know business etiquette. This is a Firm that is feedback based so I suggest giving some gentle feedback. I find this younger generation really appreciates giving them advice on how they can really present themselves in the best light

Agree TY, I think this type of feedback is part of the internship that sets them up for future success when they get their first role.
☝️ “delivers on their work and meets deadlines” soooo
that’s not enough they need to see what their manager wants to share
I used to have somebody who worked for me that was excellent. I had a mix of people who were remote and in the office. This girl who has excellent used to always take calls from the park where you could see people playing behind her. It was so frustrating. Sometimes doing their job and delivering it’s not enough.
I wasn’t sure it was fair, but then it turned out she was using our event mobile hotspot. 🤦🏻♀️
I feel like this lacks a certain degree of professionalism if they truely are joining from their phone, regardless of whether they deliver on their work and meet deadlines, especially given that the transcribe function can be used with AI to summarise actions.
Do they have their camera on during the meeting as this would be a non-negotiable for me? Also, how will they share content? Possibly they could be using their iPad as a phone or have paired their phone to their laptop but if does bother you, it would be worth discussing it more with them, so they can both understand each others POV.

No these are all the points i've been feeling. Thank you for taking the time to reply, I feel seen!
I implemented and managed an intern program for graphic artists that were going to be graduating soon. They were all amazing designers and went out of their way to '*get it right* BUT I felt it was also my job to show them real-world issues, etiquette, workarounds, etc. I explained corporate optics, even if it seemed silly to us (them). It could affect their jobs. I also had them meet print vendors (this company utilized printed products) so they could see an end result of their work, as well as how to partner with vendors and make great connections. They all loved it! They said it helped them feel more confident in their ability to get a job. I say have a discussion with this person, explaining why you are doing it and you want only the best for them. Good luck!
Do they have a laptop and choose the phone? If they don’t have a laptop then I get it.
I'd go a little further and ask if the company provided them with a laptop.
I think it depends on the role. If this is a client service intern, I’d think they need to get used to being on a computer for meetings and leading/screen sharing. You should give them opportunities to lead and share so they see the value.

I agree SPM. And I think part of leading a good internship is explaining them the nuances of corporate and how they can succeed. This is a college student who spent half their formative education years on a zoom screen due to covid. I think its part of the internship to learn norms and nuances as well as the tasks.
I say if the jobs getting done, who cares, I’m sure someone who’s always present and doing things professionally is lacking in their deliverables, but playing the “corporate” part.
Yes, I would recommend pulling him aside and letting him know honestly that he’s not doing anything wrong and that you empathize with him however corporate politics is unfortunately part of the game until the boomers retire.
That way you kind of play the authentic manager role and makes you more approachable in the future
My brother tells his sales team is about perception and delivery. He doesn’t care if they work one day a week as long as they deliver, and people perceive them working hard.
I agree that you should give gentle feedback. It may be uncomfortable but in the long run best your him/her and you!
It all started with COVID and hasn't looked back. Pretty much accepted at this point
As interns, they should be preparing for their first professional positions and learning how effective teams operate. One expectation should be that they attend meetings on a computer or laptop whenever possible. Joining by phone should be the exception, not the norm, and only used when there's a specific circumstance that has been communicated in advance.
In my work with clients and collaborators across the U.S. and internationally, it's understood that meetings are attended by laptop unless someone is traveling or has an unavoidable situation. In those cases, they let the team know ahead of time that they'll need to join by phone. Setting this expectation early helps interns develop the professional habits they'll need throughout their careers.
Give the feedback and reset or set the expectations. It may very well be that they can continue doing well with just the phone, but if that's not the standard then they'll make the adjustment. Interns want to do well, so whatever you ask of them is going to be fine for them. Good luck!
