Another paralegal at work came up to tell me she got in trouble for not tracking her attys calendared deadlines. She said “that’s not my job to babysit him”. I was shocked. I do feel like it’s our job to manage the cases and keep track even if it feels like babysitting. My attorney and I never spoke about her calendar and from day 1 I was checking it and sending her reminders. Am I wrong?!

No, you’re not wrong in the slightest.

To me, it’s common sense that when you start working with a new attorney - asking how they like their calendar managed/the reminders for said entries is one of the first things you should ask. I’ve had attorneys who needed to be reminded every day, and others who didn’t need to be reminded as long as it was calendared. Attorneys also have the responsibility to explain that to any support staff.

It is our job to remind and constantly give reminders when deadlines are coming up. I’ve drafted shells and even attached our deadlines to emails asking when can we discuss. I send myself constant reminders on my calendar to get things moving. It’s part of our profession

like

You are not wrong. This responsibility should be automatic and you, as a paralegal, should know that. HOWEVER, we are babysitters as lawyers need us to be. At the end of the day, it is their bar number and I don't feel that attorneys accept enough responsibility to their cases. This is why they make the big bucks. We should not be holding their hands.

like

You’re not wrong. I’ve always done the same. Now I can’t babysit the attorney meeting the deadline, aside from nagging within reason, but I definitely always track deadlines in the cases. I don’t think I’ve been at a firm where that wasn’t part of the position unless there was a legal assistant handling that task.

like

Excuse me? No, you are absolutely not wrong. I put deadlines on my Outlook calendar and the attorney’s Outlook calendar with, depending on the task, a one week reminder. Anyone who thinks it’s “not our job” to babysit those deadlines won’t last long term in this profession.

Simply not true. The paralegal is 100 percent wrong.

If anything, paralegals should track their attorneys' deadlines and remind them of upcoming deadlines to cover their own asses. I won't go into the methods to CYA.

In the meantime, attorneys themselves must track critical deadlines such as tolling Statutes of Limitations; blowing a Statute is always on the attorney and necessitates a call to the malpractice carrier.

Some attorneys assign deadlines to paralegals that they themselves are responsible to cover. In my firm, the attorney expected ME to ensure compliance with initial disclosure deadlines. He was wrong. All deadlines are attorney and law firm deadlines; not strictly a paralegal's.

like

In my office, the attorneys are on top of their own deadlines, as there are programs in place that automatically bring up the reminders. They are responsible for checking those tasks to make sure they meet the deadlines, although some ask their assistants to remind them as well. It's the assistants' job to make sure the deadlines are put in the system for the attorneys so the reminders are there. Paralegals ensure their own discovery deadlines are input, as the assistants don't necessarily enter those.

For tasks and reminders we currently use Aderant Total Office.

I am an associate attorney so slightly different. I keep my own deadlines in my own calendar for reminders plus any for the partner I work with to remind him. I always send an “invite” to him as well so he gets the reminder too

like

It is our job to remind the attorneys about upcoming deadlines. Some need hand holding and others are on top of things. I matter which type I have’s I always remind them 2 weeks and a week a head of time by resending the shell and documents for their work.

This is probably an odd question, but i just found out that the professor who is teaching a tax class I’m in for school, is the Tax manager from a local firm who is assigned to our taxes as a company (I’ve worked with him regarding our taxes).

This isn’t like conflict of interest or anything right?
