Find 10 people on linked in, guess their email (or find it) make a loom video (so you know if they watch it) and pitch yourself. If 2/10 reply, that’s a good rate, then just do 50 more.
People hire people not names and resumes.
CDs are stupid busy so it’s not personal
Check out the website: Talk to a Creative Director and make some appointments with the CDs on the site. Ask questions. Show your favorite project. Start creating a list of people to keep in touch with and network with. As others have mentioned, Jan and February are usually slow hiring months so now’s a great time to network.
Depending on your location, go to as many networking events as you can: CreativeMornings, One Club, etc. Join industry clubs!
Thank you! I didn't know this existed. I sent over my book earlier today.
The market is tough. Very tough. Just get what you can (agency, in-house, freelance) and just keep going at it.
Reach out to CDs individually and ask for advice on your book. It’ll get their attention, and may get you a job. Those personal connects matter.
Then, I’d take their advice and tweak your book. Or keep improving your book. The hard part about graduating during a recession is that you don’t know if your book is the problem or the economy. But when/if shops do hire again, you’ll be up against stiff competition, so your book can never be too polished or impressive.
And lastly, yeah, pivot. Or pivot in a way that means you won’t have to rely on ad agencies. Become an influencer. Find a content creator niche. There’s still money to be made in this industry, but for my $$, the biggest success of the last ten years have been the Breaking and Entering guys who couldn’t get a job in the industry so they carved out their own service.
Give up and pivot. Nobody is hiring. And you’re looking at maybe a five-year career if and when you do get hired. If you weren’t hired immediately out of ad school, your chances are slim to none - as evident by what you’re going through.
Don’t mean to sound harsh, but it’s just the reality of the industry right now.
CW1 tryna thin the herd
Are we talking early 30s or late 30s? If early 30s, hold out for a few more months to see if the market improves for junior positions, then pivot. If late 30s, get out while you can.
I'm currently in-house and it sucks right now. No one has any budget to do anything cool or interesting and leadership is investing heavily in generative AI to replace us. I'm currently trying to pivot to a more general product/brand marketing role.
If you have some savings from your last career, keep trying. The market could improve in the next few weeks. You have a Master's and a creative portfolio, have you ever considered creative strategy? It still involves a lot of ideation and it's a little safer from AI replacement.
Age means nothing when it comes to breaking in. It’s just years of experience that matters when it comes to eventually being unhirable.
Thats not true. People don’t get phased out because they’re too experienced, it’s because companies want 25-40 yo creatives to speak to youth wit 25-34 yo target market. It’s 100% age related. Sure, some people may become overqualified or overpaid and age out that way, but I doubt that will be OP.
So while you can start out at any age, you have a much shorter runway to make a living.
