Use the time to find a new job
There are two types of PIP: the intervention, where they desperately want you to address an aspect of your performance, and the diligent dump, where they are going through the legal steps before letting you go. You need to figure out which type you're facing, and whether you think the job is worth fighting for. If the performance goals are specific, and you can look your manager and your HR rep in the eye as you ask "Will I have a role at the company if I address these performance issues?" then it could be worth leaning in. I have promoted people who came through PIP processes in the past: they're not fatal. If not, then take this as four weeks advance notice that your job is on the line, and begin the search for a new gig.
This is solid advice
Do what is requested in the PIP and provide your manager (cc. HR) with a periodic written update on your progress. Do not give them an opportunity to fire you for performance. You will have more leverage for a strong severance package if they can't prove non performance. Also, look for a new job. While PIPs can can be turned around, most often it is the first step in termination. Good luck.
A PIP is one big opportunity to fire people for performance. That’s the whole point of doing them.
Listen to their feedback, check in with your team on your progress, ask questions if you don’t understand their direction, be open to suggestions. Just make sure that you are very clear on what you need to change to meet their expectations.

Let them pay you to find another job.
I was put in a PIP and actually survived after the testing period. On the other hand, years later I had to put somebody on a PIP and unfortunately I knew they had no chance. It was a protocol. Upper management had made up their mind about letting they go way ahead. There I saw firsthand the hypocrisy of it all. Do you have a real sense of your chances? How bad it got before getting the PIP? PIPs are confidential so you won’t know if anyone around you have survived a PIP in your company. Maybe that is something to ask your manager on the next check in?
Find another job - I was let go one month later. None of my managers bothered to check in with me or acknowledge progress - they most likely made up their mind!
For the most part they're degrading and a joke. Just start looking.
Leave asap
Don’t leave without a job let them let you go
apply for new jobs. 9 out of 10 times, we fire the person. the 1 out of 10 that improves, we fire later on.
95% chance they are going to fire you. Start looking for a new job today. If you have any evidence of harassment or discrimination document it before you get locked out of your email.
And forward relevant information to a personal email. Take notes of your conversations.
agree. i’m on a PIP right now and it’s brutal - working longggg hours and feeling like it’s just going to end up in termination anyway is a tough spot to be in.
Was put on a PIP and I started looking the day they told me they’d be putting me on one. Within 3 days I got an interview, within 8 days I got an offer. Focus on perfecting that resume & apply away, focus less on improving on your PIP, they’ll try to fire you regardless
You're very fortunate to have found something so quickly.
Get a lawyer. I was put on one last year. It was purely political. I had a great review in November, then a PIP end of December because the legacy bully didn't want to put up with my partner. Did the whole dance, went to all the meetings. Worked on HCP assignments (not my wheel-house) and blew those guys away. Got canned. Had my lawyer call them and squeezed them until they squealed. I mostly just wanted the non-compete removed but you know lawyers. They are like cats swatting mice. I got a new job one month later. And the legacy bully? Last I heard, she was kicked upstairs. Ooops!
look for a new job but also work your ass off! it's a sprint and stick to what they say to a "T". Ask tons of questions for clarity and record everything. DM if you need help.

I’m on one right and tbh I hope it leads to termination. I haven’t been able to find a new job despite many applications and a few interviews, but I’m very unhappy at this company anyway.
This was me last year. I had a glowing performance review and was nominated for a company award.
My agency had layoffs soon thereafter and while I wasn't impacted I was given a 30% salary reduction.
Soon thereafter I got put on a PIP (ironically right after my boss came back from family leave).
I knew our scope got cut and the fuckers couldn't be honest and just tell me they couldn't afford to keep me.
It was exhausting and beyond unprofessional. I knew it wasn't my boss's decision and he couldn't come up with a single piece of tangible constructive feedback.
The micromanaging was the worst. He started leaving me out of key meetings then handing off projects to me after the fact with very little background information only to then tell me I wasn't taking initiative.
When I tried to take initiative he would tell me I needed to CC him on everything because I was on the PIP. I couldn't win.
I could write a book about what I went through. I made his job just as difficult as he was making mine though and despite hitting or exceeding every random thing they still let me go (my boss didn't even attend my final check in it was just HR informing me my employment was being terminated).
I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this. Be kind to yourself.
Don’t. Start looking for a new job now. Do everything they ask of you and make them feel like you’re really trying, but get out of there ASAP. Even if you survive, you’ll have a target on your back going forward.
Start looking for a new job. Even if you survive, it will be hard to ever trust these people ever again. And honestly, do you want to?
RUN.
Have a heart to heart with your boss. Sometimes they’ll tell you if it can be salvaged. If yes, great. If no, they’re paying you to look for something else. And they prob don’t want a shitshow 30 day battle. So they might even pay you out to just leave (if that’s the ultimate goal)
