Use the time to find a new job

There are two types of PIP: the intervention, where they desperately want you to address an aspect of your performance, and the diligent dump, where they are going through the legal steps before letting you go. You need to figure out which type you're facing, and whether you think the job is worth fighting for. If the performance goals are specific, and you can look your manager and your HR rep in the eye as you ask "Will I have a role at the company if I address these performance issues?" then it could be worth leaning in. I have promoted people who came through PIP processes in the past: they're not fatal. If not, then take this as four weeks advance notice that your job is on the line, and begin the search for a new gig.

I had a pip for confronting an ECD about recycling ideas. I beat it. I stayed another 2 years and was let go when we lost a client. One way or another, you'll be let go. Pips are rarely used for performance related reasons.

I’m sorry, friend. Highly likely that you have 1 month until you will be terminated for performance. Regardless of what you do. Same thing happened to me. It was completely procedural. Had nothing to do with my actual performance. Company needed to terminate me with no recourse because client needs changed, and they had only brought me on for this client. This pip made my termination for performance very clean, and I had no way of pushing back. Most of the feedback in PiP didn’t even apply to me or any situation I was part of, and HR couldn’t give me further explanation or examples. It was pretty much made up, or vague at best. They just said they are looking for me to move forward, not concentrate on anything from the past.

Do the steps in the PiP, but use this paid time to look for another job.

They want to get rid of you. And you should prepare for that.

Do everything they ask and document the steps you are taking and the conversations you are having. but you seriously need to be looking for another job.

In my experience, PIPs are something HR makes people do before they fire somebody they already have given up on.

Sorry to be so blunt. But dairy tales aren’t going to help you here.

You will be more marketable to a new job if you are currently employed. so get out there now and crank up that job search.

I was put on one a year ago. I think I’m in the clear now. It was embarrassing and stressful. I knew it only as a tool towards termination, but my supervisor I think wanted to use it in a more positive way.

Not trying to doom and gloom but keep on your toes nonetheless - got fed the same line and passed the PIP with flying colors then got laid off three months after when the company lost a client. They said one had nothing to do with the other but I feel like even if you clear it, it puts you on the “first to go” list when things take a downturn.

I was on a PIP just because the leadership of the agency changed and they wanted to get rid of everybody. Very unfair. I managed to be transferred internally, but a PIP is the worst thing ever happened to me.

Achieve the performance goals.

is there any way to tell whether the pip is for performance reasons or actually because the company needs to start laying people off?

Mine was due to performance and it’s clearly outlined on it where I’ve screwed up but every case is different

Follow the steps – while you look for a new job. These days they are usually just a step in the termination process. Sometimes a manager is actively trying to save your spot but I wouldn't count on that unless you have a close relationship with them.

Work harder,do better!

Get your resume ready. PIP means they've already decided you're on your way out. They're a paper trail to prove they did their due diligence.

HR armor. Nothing more.

Depends on the office, but give them the old top tank before they can you.

What’s top tank?

Just do your job and do it well. You can beat the politics! it’s all bullshit that is covered up in games. You can defeat this by being great.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
