You’ll have more a future with an account background than “creative.” Account experience gives you more options. There’s an army of us late 30-something creatives trying to GTFO. But we don’t have the skills to do anything else.
Take portfolio classes if you can. Don’t need to go full on ad-school, but just a couple of classes that will help you develop some good spec campaigns. And while you’re doing that, make friends with the creatives you’re working with, especially the CDs, and let them know your ambitions. Ask to help out on the shit nobody really wants to do, like social posts and banners. Do a good job with whatever they give you. Keep doing both the actual work, and developing your spec work, and you’ll get there.
Disagree with ACD1. I was an AE and I have an MBA and I’ve been way more successful as a writer. If you’re a good writer and have account skills you can go far.
I recommend in-person classes. I’m not familiar with any good online programs, but one of the most important aspects of portfolio school is learning how to work with a partner and that is going to be much easier to learn in person.
In NYC, in person classes at SVA or AdHouse are both worthwhile. Online, there’s more options... one site I can definitely recommend is 101theadschool.com - they used to do in person classes but moved online - same instructors though, and they are great. I switched to copywriting myself from design, and I owe a lot of it to the work I did with Lee at 101.
As much as it pains me to say it - do some freebie work for a smaller agency/freelance friend... good way to write a lot and build a book.
Personally, I shifted from account manager to a strategy position, and once I moved again I took a creative strategy role with full copywriting duties - now I write more copy than anything.
Go to a small agency where you can have the opportunity to wear multiple hats. That’s the hard way that might not work. Portfolio school is a much clearer path and has a higher success rate.
I also recently made Facebook group to help connect aspiring creatives to build their portfolios together. I made mine on my own and it was so hard so I hope this helps!

I think doing free work if you can get some isn’t bad advice but it’s definitely more important to have the type of work you’d want to make versus crappy website copy for example. You’ll have to make spec (fake ads) to show your thinking . It’s hard but you can do it! Finding a partner is the hardest part I think
Thanks everyone, so you wouldn't recommend portfolio school? Seems like it helps consolidate everything but the only downside is cost. Does anyone know the rough avg it'll set me back by?
If you want to and can afford it, sure, but it’s not like your only two choices are going to portfolio school or not getting a job. You can make your own way.
I also think downside is time, but like acd 2 said, if you can afford it it’s definitely a great option but there are other ways.
ACD1 Do you mean options specifically outside of advertising? I've always been a creative and have only entered advertising through account since it's how I was introduced. But would love to hear more since being pigeon-holed is something I'm definitely afraid of.
Thanks all! As far as portfolio school/classes, which do you recommend? Especially since I'm working full time in NYC. Would online classes help?
Absolute first thing, pick up a copy of "Hey, Whipple Squeeze This." Second thing, read it. Then go from there.
