It's so hard to leave academia when you've invested so much time and energy into it, and all your mentors and supporters are there. But it's also hard to keep going when you're struggling with crippling anxiety and feel like you're disappointing everyone. I know how you feel. It's a tough decision, but you have to do what's best for you.

If you don’t like it just walk out of the door . You can do postdocs in industry, just find a biotech or pharma company and apply

I did, until I explained to my PI that there are tons of research oriented industry opportunities out there and that I can’t rule those out as career paths that will make me happy.

Don’t let other people guilt you into staying in academia. PIs hate seeing people leave for industry because they see the writing on the wall. It’s becoming a lot harder to find people who they can exploit.

This is a difficult decision, but it sounds like you have thought about it long and hard. You have the opportunity to do something great, and I know that your mentors and supporters will be proud of you whatever you choose to do. Congratulations on making this tough decision!

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling with anxiety over disappointing your mentors. I hope that you can find a way to work through these feelings and continue to pursue your career goals. Remember that your mentors want what is best for you, and they will be proud of you no matter what path you choose.
