Work for a multinational. Move around inside the company every 2 years. After you've obtained skills from current company, then jump. Job Hopping shows companies you're not reliable as a long term solution for them. I stayed with my first company 10 years before I hopped. 5 year analyst, 2 years consolidation manager, 1 years ERP implimentation and 2 years internal audit.
And stay away from cost accounting. That's a pigeon hole gig.
The two roles not to get pigeonhole is AR and AP. I did AR for a company for 7 years and I was stuck doing it. My co workers were promoted to senior accountants and I was stuck as a staff accountant
What is your ultimate goal? That’s the key. You might have made a better choice by getting an MBA. Perhaps a CPA and MBA would have been even better. Don’t let your job lead your career. For example, since you’re an assistant controller, you might choose controller as your ultimate goal because it’s the next step based on your job. But it might not be what you ultimately want to do.
Give yourself some time to really think about it. Be specific in what you want... what kind of leadership role? what Title?? do you want to be involved in strategic planning, financing, investments , financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting.. etc..
From a skills standpoint, public accounting is a great foundation.. companies like to have CPAs because it means expertise in accounting and financial reporting. If you envision a job that includes financial reporting and the certified financial statement . Definitely get certified ..
Perhaps also get an MBA that can be helpful for other opportunities with larger companies. A CPA and MBA is a great combination.
