That can be a delicate move. If you let your current employers know, they'll be aware that you were disloyal to the extent of finding another job. So that may not go over well. If you're willing to walk, just tell them you've got an offer you're thinking of taking, but out of courtesy to them you're giving the chance to match it. You never know, something like that might work.

I like this approach! framing it in this way can help to avoid burning bridges
I think you can tell them exactly that. You are looking to make more money and you found a company that is willing to offer more per hour. You'd like to stay at your current company but you'd need them to match the other offer. If they can, they will, if they can't, then you can accept the other offer.
The official advice is to walk and not let them counter, the reasoning being that they now know you are looking and you will be at the top of the list for any future cuts. Most people only move up the compensation ladder by switching jobs, which is an unfortunate reality. Even if they did match it, it makes you wonder why they weren't paying you that in the first place. If you've weighed all the variables, go take the higher pay and new opportunities.
It depends.
Rational:
Who has to wear the cost?
How much they perceive the value you bring vs the cost?
Emotional:
How they feel about this request and how forceful it was perceived.
Tone and delivery will matter just as much if not more.
Game:
At the end of the day it's like a poker game. Are you going to hold, fold or raise the stakes and is it a bluff or are you ready to walk?
Well Said.
They know it's a possibility you're leaving because the company probably contacted them. So at this point they need to ask what can we do to keep you💪🏽🙏🏽🙄
Well Said.
1st of all, congrats on the offer. Ignore all the bad advice about just walk and never counter. Absolute garbage advice. 1) Negotiation is how you advance in your career. 2) Burning bridges is NEVER a good idea.
Good Advice:
1) Ask for a raise based on merit. If you like what your current employer has to offer, consider it.
2) Consider how the other offer came up? If you were actively looking for another job, why? Will money fix the lack of satisfaction that made you look for another job in the first place.
You have to be willing to resign and see if your company is willing to give you a counteroffer to match or exceed the offer you got. You won’t know until you do it. You are essentially blackmailing your current company. Good luck!
I found a position that was completely different than my current one, in which about 30 people are under me. It's just exhausting overseeing the work of others. When I told my company that I was leaving for the new position, they offered $25k more yearly to not only match but to rise above my new offer. I didn't take it, but it did make me wonder why I wasn't making that money before I decided to leave. If you have a solid offer and are willing to walk, with confidence that you will be happy in the new position with moderate confidence that you won't live with regrets, then what do you have to lose?
I had a friend that no matter what position he was in, he continually interviewed for other positions. He didn't take an offer unless it far outweighed the pay, benefits, both regarding outlook for professional and personal growth and wealth. This action kept his interviewing skills current. His knowledge of where the industry stood and was going was current. He also felt his value to the industry was strong, leading to confidence and strength when asking for a raise or other forms of compensation for his value to his current company. He never apologized for interviewing with other companies and explained that he was just putting feelers out. This actually kept whatever corporation he currently worked on their toes, as they had the knowledge that if unhappy he was always valuable to the industry. I modeled after his actions and have stayed very happy.
