Any advice on making the leap from public accounting? Newly promoted tax manager (corporate income tax) who’s been with the firm her whole career (5 years). I’m ready to try something in industry and take on a more traditional accounting role to learn the other side of business, but am feeling overwhelmed on where to start. I can’t really take much of a pay cut but am worried on how to make that jump when I don’t have the traditional accounting experience.

Learn what you can about the new role and don’t be afraid to admit to prospective employers there are things youll have to learn on the job. You’ve moved quickly at KPMG and can flex that you’ll learn quickly with them too. Good luck!

Same issues here - up for the manager promotion this year and have been casually searching since October. It’s been hard to identify what job titles to search for especially without taking a pay cut. A friend that made the transition a few years ago said to search for staff/senior staff accountants, senior accountants, assistant controllers, and controllers. Just look at the job description to see which best fits your experience. Most job requirements are entirely too specific so don’t be afraid to apply to some that are just out of reach. I’m building up my resume by getting bookkeeping and Quickbooks certifications and possibly the CPB license through NACPB since I already have my CPA.

I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. I don’t have specific expectations but I want to be compensated at least market for a NYC based GC (which looks like cash comp of at least $300k plus bonus, etc). Any suggestions on how people would respond?

Need advice: do you tell your manager that you’re unhappy or do you just leave?

I’m being taken advantage of with being thrown so much work and really don’t see my salary increasing to be in line with my coworkers doing similar work. I’m a consistent high performer - management reviews tell me that much.

My coworker did mention to the manager that they’re not being paid well for the work they do, and our manager took it personally and told them they’re ungrateful 🥲

Has anyone went from public accounting to the government(IRS) or vice versa? Been at the IRS as a revenue agent for about 6 years now , currently a GS-13 in NYC. WLB is absolutely incredible and I believe cannot be beat, but looking for a pay increase as NYC is insanely expensive. Anyone who’s made the jump, pros and cons ?
