Need advice: do you tell your manager that you’re unhappy or do you just leave?

I’m being taken advantage of with being thrown so much work and really don’t see my salary increasing to be in line with my coworkers doing similar work. I’m a consistent high performer - management reviews tell me that much.

My coworker did mention to the manager that they’re not being paid well for the work they do, and our manager took it personally and told them they’re ungrateful 🥲

If you want to stay, talk to the manager. They can’t do anything about a situation you’re unhappy about if you don’t tell them.

I'm not sure what your manager can do in terms of your compensation. You seem to be new here so here's a word of advice - the most effective and guaranteed method of getting pay bumps is to leave for another role. Talking to your manager or coach or resource manager isn't gonna be fruitful in any meaningful sense in terms of compensation since that's above their pay grades - the most they can do is put you on a different engagement.

In short, take advantage of the hot job market right now and get your bag.

I left! Don’t burn bridges though. They know very well what they’re doing and putting their colleagues through. You can’t ignore turnover. Even in exit interview, be mindful of what you say. You still need them as a reference. You’ll find great opportunities outside of BDO. The jump was worth it.

Put your foot down and talk. Nothing will change if people just leave and say nothing

smart

I just had a talk with my manager about the amount of hours we are working and the low pay compared to market in our area. It was a good talk and I'm waiting to hear back about a raise to market value.

If your company values you as an employee and you enjoy where you work then the conversation should be productive. If they don't value you then you will be able to tell and I would suggest looking for a new job.

helpful

Agree with everyone saying that the manager can’t do much about your pay but their response isn’t appropriate either. If you like the company and want to stay I would try to talk to someone and advocate for yourself. The problem can’t be resolved if no one know how you feel. Best of luck!

This manager sounds delusional as I would agree that we are all underpaid. Managers can’t really help with comp, but they might be able to help if it’s a workload problem as they deal with project scheduling. Worth a shot at least. If they shut you down hard, might as well leave because who wants to work for that kind of “leadership”.

like

A manager’s opinion about your compensation (or really a manager’s opinion about anything, really) shouldn’t drive a decision about your career. Do talk to your manager about workload, work style, performance, etc. But talk to a partner if you want something “big” - comp increase, significant schedule change, etc.

smart

If you want a raise you need to go to a partner. Managers don’t have much say in that.

If you otherwise do like your role, I’d take your issues to your coach/partner. A lot of issues with poor managers aren’t ever brought up and we just lose people so the issues never get addressed. Not saying that will guarantee a change but it might if youre interested in staying where you are.

Just leave they don’t care

EY2 is correct. You talk if you want change. A manager can't change much. But a partner can be there for you.
Everything depends on circumstances. Do you like your work? What's your level? Would this be a good time for you to leave? How do people in the office feel and do you like your team?
I left a firm where work was chill AF because hated the managing partner. I now work more than I've ever worked in my life... but I love the team and leadership. Think things through and don't make rush decisions... grass is not greener, is different.

Is this legal? My spouses company just decided to change their comp structure for account managers. It was base + comm, now it’s commission only but nothing changed, OT commission is the same, didn’t get more points, just took away the base pay and said work harder basically. So now they have to worker harder to get $50k they were already making. (Not a decision based on employee performance, they’ve been crushing it. I think the company is just trying to save money they overspent else where)
