I don’t think such a move makes a lot of sense. If you are successful where you are, best to stay put and build further on your existing success. You will be treated as a second class citizen always branded as a “former B4” partner who doesn’t understand how McK or BCG works. You have to look at the way they think of, and talk about B4s and people there… with such disparage.
I would stay put.
Came in as a Partner, not MDP. But this has been my experience, almost 2 years here and cannot wait to gtfo.
Coach
Very difficult to integrate at both firm. Expect for the natives to be hostile and block you from joining account teams. If you have your own strong Rolodex then you will be ok but expect others to pile on to your engagements without inviting you to any of theirs.
I did it. Huge regrets about it. Amazing people and brain power, but if you didn’t come through the ranks the juice is not worth the squeeze. The exit opportunities are amazing and prestige is outstanding but the stress of the whole thing and integration pains are not worth it.
Still here on my 4th year and still integrating 🤦🏻
If you’ve a choice, choose McKinsey.
Received direct reach out from a partner based on a client referral. Went through several interviews. Got offer but it wasn't that much more if you consider ask off the risk of a move
View from BCG:
-It will be hard to staff good teams and create a pyramid in the early years. If you prove you can be super commercially successful and importantly, other mdps who are successful want to team with you, you have a shot
-related to above, tie your hat to someone who you know is commercially successful that you provide a differentiated pov from. If you don’t have this coming in it makes things way harder
-don’t underestimate the current coverage at your key clients and make sure you are talking to them. You likely are coming in with clients that BCG teams serve (even if they don’t they are tagged to them). You need to get along with those teams AND provide differentiated capability. Interview these people in the interview process to understand how much work they do with them and what kind
-don’t be in strategy // have a unique hard skill set. Otherwise you’re cooked and no one will bring you to anything cause generalist BCG mdps are not going to share rev credits unless you are incremental to their sale
In summary, it’s extremely hard and the only people I’ve seen do it successfully are functional (mostly tech) people
Made the move it was massive upgrade for me. If you are doing strategy work at B4 the brand permission you get at MBB makes selling much easier - even at higher price points. If you are doing something where B4 have larger practices then it’s less obvious. It also makes a difference on what practice area you are joining. Places where all of the major accounts are covered are a lot harder to integrate into vs smaller growing practices.
