It's a fallacy. Reading self help makes us feel like we are working towards self improvement without putting in the efforts of actually applying those principles in our life. Obsessively reading the books keep us on a happiness treadmill. Once started it's difficult to stop without feeling guilt and resentment towards our present selves.
I feel most of the self-help books are for beginners who are either not yet introduced to the world of books or find it difficult to stay upbeat & motivated. Once you’ve decided the kind of person you wanna be and what you want to learn, there’s nothing that another self-help book can add to your perspective.
PS: I’ve been reading non-fiction for over 5 years now.
I started out with self help books but later i realized i most of them were just for a short term motivation only of few of them actually give you tools you can implement in your life. Now i read more biographies and a bit of classic fiction.
