Drops in milk supply is really hard to combat. Milk production occurs on a curve that slowly decreases after the peak around 6-8 weeks and once you go back to work and have longer stretches between pumps, it decreases further. There’s even a name for it: the 6th/7th month slump. I’m saying this because we all give ourselves such a hard time and go through so much to try and maintain or increase supply after the slump starts, but it’s extremely difficult. So whatever you go with, be gentle with yourself and be proud of yourself for what you’ve accomplished. It’s hard work.
Thank you I didn’t realize this!
Breastfeeding works as birth control IF (big if) your child does not use a pacifier; you do not use a stroller; you mainly wear your child and co-sleep; and you nurse on demand, not on a set schedule.
If any one of those pieces aren’t adhered to, then artificial birth control is your best bet if abstinence or condoms aren’t your thing. Paragard is non-hormonal and worked for me without dropping my milk supply, but I can’t speak much about other options.
I had Mirena after my kid and this explains why I joke that they are "just for decoration".
I recently got the copper IUD. They warn of heavier, crampier periods. Haven't had those yet.
My partner has commented that there's been a change in taste. I feel this one more than I ever did my Mirena. And since getting it in I've had coital headaches (no doctor believes me they are related, but they literally came on immediately after getting the IUD placed a month ago).
I don't hate the Paragaurd, but I had a better experience with the Mirena. At least from what I've noticed.
They put me on the pill before I got my IUD, and for me, my moods were all over the place (I have bipolar disorder). Learned I can't be on those anymore.
A progestin only form of bc (pill, IUD, etc). I’m surprised your ob even offered a combination pill if you are breastfeeding. I’m 8 weeks pp with my 2nd and my new ob (I switched practices with this pregnancy) echoed the ob I saw with my 1st that estrogen has a negative impact on milk supply.
I don’t remember seeing a decrease in supply with my first after starting the progestin only pill. I just picked up my prescription for this go, so I haven’t started it yet to report on any supply issues.
The progestin only pill is what I tried, it didn’t dip my supply but I did for whatever reason get stomach upset with it. I gave it about a month before giving up and resorting to condoms.
How old is your baby?
4 months
Yeah, how old is the baby? Dips in breast milk production are not-so-coincidentally timed to ages when they get a bit more independent, and it’s easy (speaking from experience) to stress over that dip without realizing it would happen with or without birth control intervention.
There are non hormonal BC out there. Having had two though I would say just supplement with formula and give yourself a break. I honestly don’t think breast milk vs formula - like many kid-related things we agonize over - actually doesn’t matter much, especially after the first few months. But that’s just my experience.
