any insights on the philly orchestra? want to potentially go to brahms piano concerto no. 2 in late january. i know nothing abt orchestra but want to surprise s/o as they’ve been wanting to go to a symphony. would y’all reccomend this?

Yes, the Philadelphia Orchestra is awesome! Had financial trouble a little over a decade back, but still a super solid reputation. See if you can listen to the other piece on the Brahms concert. When I worked at an orchestra, they often programmed new music on the same program as a classic work like the Brahms Piano Concerto.

I took a quick look at the website — if you’re flexible on date, the Ravel the weekend before and Yuja Wang on Rachmaninov the following weekend should also be great concerts with more predictable music! You can find videos of Yuja Wang on YouTube. She’s super entertaining.

Yeah OP Philly is great, Curtis is their feeder and they work with some of the best artists all over the world. Kind of like Minnesota Symphony or SWR, in that they're one of those gems that isn't as much of the household brand as New York Philharmonic or Vienna Philharmonic, but the talent is legendary and lives up to the hype.

Also fun fact, my great uncle was principal cellist and director of Philadelphia Orchestra, and my great grandfather was a Pianist that toured with them, but that was almost 70 years ago lol
