Yelp loudly and stop playing or interacting with him when he does it
Tried that too. It makes him bite more because he wants the attention.
My trainer helped me by saying puppies have to bite SOMEthing, it’s just what they have to do. The key is redirecting the biting instinct to what is appropriate (ie toys and chews) and trying to be patient until he grows out of it
^^^^^^^^^^^^. Puppy will stop biting they grow out of it.
Bitter apple spray...
My puppy thinks biting and pouncing is part of play. We always stand up when playing, it helps a lot since it is a more dominate position than sitting with her on the ground. We redirect with toys. Most dogs aren’t aggressive they just think you’re trying to play with them.
I always thought this was the way to go but would this somehow be misunderstood as being rewarded for the behavior with playtime or a toy?
Is he biting you or other stuff? Could be teething?
I've heard saying "ow!" Like SC1 mentioned. With my parent's dog we would hold her mouth closed for a moment and say "no bite", that worked pretty well.
Thank you! I’m just worried that this biting and lounging at me will become aggressive (or already is and I just didn’t realize). We can’t take him to training because he doesn’t have all of his shots yet.
If the puppy is too young for training then it is probably a developmental stage. Make sure you’re giving a variety of flavored long-chew treats (e.g., elk antlers). I also recommend just saying how! And then maybe separating yourself a bit from the puppy, so it is a gentle negative reaction. Eventually puppy will learn! I have a 7 mo old puppy so I feel your pain!
Bully sticks are also good but definitely take it away before it gets too short so your dog doesn’t choke on it. Don’t get rawhide since I’ve heard they use some type of glue to hold it all together.
Puppies = patience and consistency.
Get him tons of toys!
