Having worked for Microsoft in HR for a decade we hire, less than 1% from those who sought us, it was always who the recruiters found by actively searching for passive candidates or employee referrals
i k ow personaly the heads of TA at facebook and apple and they operate the same way.
further whole Big4 backgrounds are wonderful spring boards they do track analytics on success of employees based on where they have worked and unless something has changed in the past 5 years Deloitte and EY are fighting up hill as somethign like 90% of those hired from thise firms leave within 24 months.
EY1 as individual candidates no, but having been hired out of Big6 when I went there I can tell you that they loved the training but detested the sense of entitlement from Big6/4 candidates and certain hiring managers were dismissive off the bat.
Hat was fairly based on experience and analytics against performance and retention.
In reality because this industry promotes people far faster Han industry and has average increases far greater too it does creat challenges everywhere when people pivot to industry. But it’s also a belief, justified or not, that without the “firm and its assets” to lean on many people are not as good as they present and that this leads to higher turnover.
I’m not saying any of that is true but it is what the analytics tell them and so people coming from certain places end up having to overcome a perception they are likely not even aware of
Referrals. Never just blindly apply online
Career Coach here...I would start with how you position yourself on LinkedIn and in your resume. All the referrals in the world won’t help if your career brand doesn’t align with the industry’s needs.
-Narrow down the role that you’re interested in.
-Identify the transferable skills and experience that you have that align with the role.
-Review current job opportunities and people in that role regularly to establish key areas to create updates for your profile and resume in turn.
Rinse and repeat.
This is how you position and optimize your career brand.
This is a process that can be initially daunting but definitely a MUST whether actively looking for a job or not. This is a game changer...I’ve done it and coached it...and it works even in a pandemic.
Interviewd at both FB and Amazon. I had a referral for FB and applied cold to Amazon.
For both the positions, my current work very strongly aligned with the job description.

Copy and paste job description as your resume.

On a serious note, tailor your resume to the position they are looking for. It’s ok to drop irrelevant experience from resume but make sure to bring up what they are looking for.

Referrals are great but don’t hesitate to apply just because you don’t have one. I applied to a bunch of tech companies with referrals and didn’t hear back but I managed to get an offer from a tech unicorn just by applying though LinkedIn
