The problem is I read stuff, but thats it. Like I can read through a slide or pdf, but 90% of it'll just go out of my brain instantly
Strangely enough, when I have a problem or I'm searching for specific info, whatever I read is retained 90% or better it feels like. I always try to work in reverse, as in first figure out a problem or what I need to find out, then go read whatever info is presented
Its funny b/c in school in all the English composition classes, I was always taught to read the content first then read the question, but I'm doing the exact opposite in my adult life
I remember as a kid those tests with a short story and thinking I should read the story then the questions. then go back to the story and try to match/eliminate answers by skimming through the story. I couldve easily just skipped to the second part, read question then seek answers
I always turned in tests at the last minute cuz it took me sooo long
Yep that is literally me OP. I do not have the attention span to look over powerpoints or large documents and then I skim the and somehow end up missing the information I needed. I am just like you and can't seem to slow myself down enough to just read it from start to finish.
Thank god I’m not the only one. I’m early career as well so nice to hear you as a manager also experiences this. Even on my Vyvanse still cant seem to do it
I have an issue with reading too. I get overwhelmed by all the information I need to know to do the task. If you remove client data and firm data (think things proprietary to the firm), you can paste the paragraph in ChatGPT and ask it to summarize what the important tasks are from the paragraph.
It’s not 100% and you have to be REALLY sure there’s nothing proprietary in the data before you use it, but it helps me when I’m too stuck to start.
Ctrl F
I use speechify to read the text to speech (best to check if client allows using speechify or any alternative text to speech software…usually it’s an accommodation so they can’t deny if requested) n then anything that’s important I take a screenshot n put it in a private miro/mural (whatever whiteboard a client uses) n add sticky notes/other screenshots as a brainstorming n pattern spotting thing
Makes heavy info broken down into smaller visual bits
