Within everyone’s brain there are neurotransmitters that send messages to different parts of your brain. Neurotransmitters are like traffic cops. In the adhd brain, the neurotransmitters are not doing their job. So there’s like a traffic jam in your head. The medication helps stimulate the neurotransmitters so that they can send these messages to the proper place so that you can focus and get things done. This is from a children’s book that I read to my son. It’s important to know that adhd is problem of ability and not will. It’s so difficult to hear that you should just work harder because you already are. I always felt that I had to work twice as hard to get to the same place as everyone else.
That’s my problem...I’m so distracted and it’s really hard for me to retain focus, concentrate, and remember things
I’m texting this during a meeting and I almost need to restrain myself from doing something else to pay attention...
In the past I’ve blamed my procrastination and my own efforts
But I’m also more of a creative person and have a very outgoing and flexible person, but im worried that were I to take medicine I would lose “that part of myself that makes me me"
I was recently diagnosed at 42 as a result of doing research for my son (7), who I suspected had it. As I was reading through the symptoms, I realized that I checked most of the boxes. I started on the lowest dose of Adderall and went up to the next dose. The medication has a stigma due to a few people that have abused it. I don’t feel myself without it. For the first time I feel “normal” and calm. The best way I can describe it is that it felt like I was driving through a thick fog. Once I started with the medication, it felt like the fog was lifted. I’m also creative. That has not changed. Because I’m not dealing with the other stuff, I actually have more time for hobbies. I don’t get frustrated anymore or have a short temper, and I’m no longer completely exhausted at the end of the day. My son just started with a low dose, immediate release of Adderall. His personality has not changed. There are less arguments. He said he felt “new” when he first took it. He’s doesn’t have to struggle so much with reading and paying attention. Taking adhd medication is no different from wearing glasses to improve sight or taking cholesterol medicine to lower your cholesterol.
If you happen to be in Denver I can point you to a couple people. Other use the CHADD web site to find people locally
Glad to have found this bowl. Thanks M1. I was recently diagnosed with a mild ADHD. It gets aggravated easily and I took Mydayis for a while and I was super sharp and focused. I also recently cut wheat from my diet. The modern strains of wheat have been known to cause brain fog as well.
Thanks. I was diagnosed at 40 myself. Right now I’m taking strattera and it doesn’t feel like it’s doing much. Or maybe not as much. It impacts me by being over anxious, impulsive and frustrated way too easily. Sometimes the frustration comes in so fast I can’t stop it, like yesterday in a client meeting. I also felt like I was at fault due to procrastination among other faults. My dr is hesitant to prescribe something like adderall...
A good psychiatrist who works with adhd patients will get you on the right meds. There is clinical research and data going back to the 60s on these meds. All the “newer” versions are just better at time release but still the same fundamental compound. Also the meds have different physiological impacts to children, teens and adults. I went through a fairly quick trial on both types of meds along with meds for Rejection Sensitivity Dysmorphia which is co-morbid with adult adhd. Side effects are almost always due to taking too high of a dose
Medication wears off quickly (4-12 hours depending on the medication), so not much harm in trying it. I usually just take 4-hour Ritalin when I need to be focused. You’ll still forget shit. Write it down.
Is being forgetful an effect of adhd as well?
