They don’t have a correlation - so if you want to go to pilot school you should. It’s like musings of random consultants on this bowl about doing trades, taking up plumbing or starting a business.
Wdym building excel models and slide decks doesn’t immediately translate to flying a plane?
Agreed, there’s be an assumption of starting from flight school, was just curious if anyone has moved that way before.
You go, Mr Top Gun, be that flyboy you always dreamed of being.
I did the opposite - military pilot to consulting.
Airline upside
-job is easy and you don’t take work home with you
-travel perks
-control schedule (with seniority after 10-20yrs)
-comp (with seniority)
Downside
-unionized and you are not paid on merit. Your schedule, comp, lifestyle is purely based on time in the company. It takes a while to build this up to a reasonable level of control
-often mind numbing boring
-health - very hard to stay fit, radiation exposure, sitting for long times, always eating takeout, time zones, sleep etc. this is the one most people overlook. It takes a ton of discipline to build a routine in a life that has no routine
If you’re interested in pursuing this, I highly recommend looking up “Trent Dyrsmid” on YouTube. He has tons of videos breaking down the quickest paths and associated costs (time and money) to attaining different pilot careers - cargo, regional, major carrier, etc.
If Nathan fielder can do it so can you
It takes a while to make good money doing it and it’s very seniority based. So you’ll get the real shitty flights first and will be the last one to put in for your days off. My best friends husband is a pilot.
That’s true there are on call nights. Also he has like $600K in debt for schooling lol.
Also, I’ve flown a Cessna 172 and it’s amazing. I love flying planes! I wish I would have gone into it when I was younger lol. I absolutely love flying planes! Never done a large plane, only a 4 seater haha. But it’s dreamy.
The time to start is today, as seniority is the most important driver of aviation job satisfaction.

I’m colorblind… so no?
I have an old coworker and friend that did this. Do be warned it is a lot of work still and the demand for pilots from what he tells me isn’t as high as it was a few years ago. Still good, but you’re not getting red hot offers say 5 years ago
I am exploring other career plans like writing, becoming a farmer. They do pay better in the long run.
I mean I used to play Farmville back in the day.
If you have the quals go at it.
I’ve got a friend and former colleague in the UK who did that. He’s very happy.
A glorified bus driver.
Have fun up in the air.
