today I choose violence

Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

There are pockets of Gamma that do production work / MLOps and make use of those practices, but i would say the majority of cases in North America do not. That said, if you get into one of these pockets (eg personalization) then you’ll do a lot of it.
In my opinion, the MLE skill cap at Gamma gets hit pretty quickly because the projects we do aren’t nearly at the scale you’d see at a tech company.
That’s very good to know! Thank you very much LDS 1 & BCG 1
BCG gamma kickstarted my team in 2018, they mostly had data scientist do engineering work so after 12 months of work, their code and systems weren’t at production level, they were more at proof of concept level implementations. Their ML models were good.
I had to pick up where they left and productionize everything.
I’m from Gamma Engineering team and thankfully this is getting less common.
More generally, this also depends on what was sold. Specially in shorter cases, the clients pushes for more “science” and decides their internal team will do the heavy lifting.
I work with some ex-Gamma and they’re all amazing.
They do really good business oriented DS. Patentable stuff too
