Do you know what you would want to do at an agency?
What city?
I honestly am more knowledgable with copywriting and art direction careers but here’s what I think you need to do:
1) Network. This is true with everyone in advertising. Find events that are relevant though. The One Club is my favorite and they do most of their stuff here in NYC. They will have “Day break sessions” in a week at agencies, including production companies. Feel free to DM me about it. There may be other clubs or events that are relevant to production. Reach out to agency producers on LinkedIn and offer to buy them a drink or a lunch for a quick chat. Stress that you just want to learn about their job. If you don’t already have a LinkedIn, you should.
2) Curate. Production skills means having an eye for things. Luckily you have photo and video experience so here is where you flex that. Having a reel is great.
3) Learn. Attend relevant workshops or night classes specific to the industry. There’s one at SVA called Production in Motion that starts June 4th and runs about $500. There could be some other ones in the city, I’m just not familiar when it comes to production. Soak up all the knowledge you can in these classes and network with everyone.
4) Forget your age. Do whatever it takes to be unmindful of your age. Yes the industry is ageist for stupid reasons. So don’t put unrelevant work experience in your resume. Don’t put your graduation years on your resume unless you just finished a program recently. Other than that, you can’t do much so don’t sweat over it too much as it’s beyond your control. You can do this.
