After a formative assessment I have them assess their skills or I tell them what to focus on and provide several different quia activities for them to choose from. OR i give them tiered questions typically after some sort of info gap activity. I also provide variations of fun games such as Kahoot challenge or quizizz challenge. Putting them in groups based on skills has worked as well. I like to also had “bonus questions” to work....These are just a few ideas..... also giving them student choice in the form of a variety of projects to demonstrate learning has worked well. For assessments I’ve also given different questions to native vs non native. At the beginning of the year we also have a big discussion about my class policy that “fair doesn’t mean equal” and show them the attached cartoon. I will say I tend to create more challenging activities and then add accommodations as needed so all kids can be challenged instead of getting everyone at the same level (to have the higher kids get even stronger)
Also- we are very strict in terms of our levels and make sure kids are accurately placed in the correct language class
We really try to get students placed correctly. Maybe implement a placement test at the beginning of each year? If the students are just “passed up” each year by the previous teacher it is more difficult. Do you have counselors that help with scheduling etc? Maybe start with them?
I start class with silent reading or journaling most days and much of the reason is that it allows for students to work at their level. Open ended speaking prompts can do the same thing. For example, I really like gallery walks.
