Big Four is generally for people who couldn’t make it into biglaw. Not sure why you would want to go that route: same/worse work life balance but much lower pay. It is also a very different skillset
Having done the reverse move, I can’t stress enough how much you should not leave big law for big 4. When I moved to law, I doubled my salary and my hours requirement was identical to big 4. Since that time, the firm’s hours requirement has actually decreased by 200 hrs and my pay has gone up in lockstep. In addition, there is a real path to partner in law whereas in big 4 the anonymity can be career killing as you are largely just another cog among the thousands.
WNT is somewhat better as you are generally not working on compliance and therefore typically do more interesting work, are not on client engagements (resource to the firm rather than clients), are somewhat better compensated, and may have better hours. However you are still underpaid as compared to law. In addition you are a pure cost to the firm (generally don’t have your own clients generating revenue) which can be a tricky/tough spot particularly for junior and mid level associates that have yet to develop a great deal of technical experience or expertise in a given area, or at least not enough to be considered “thought leaders”.
Big 4 fudging sucks and is the worse
Why do you want to move over?
I think it’s unlikely to get a manager level role. Senior associate is more likely with an expectation of promotion in the next cycle. The models are quite different and what a 2nd/3rd tax associate attorney does and what a manager in big4 does is vastly different.
Comp in NY should be ~200k base so if you’re moving off cravath scale, will be quite a bit less as bonuses trend at like 10%.
Work is heavily dependent on the group you’re moving to (comp as well for that matter, 200k is on a M&A assumption).
What group are you trying to join?
Thanks everyone, just exploring options. My mental and physical health were suffering and I was wondering if I just needed a normal job with PTO.
Yes that’s one of the routes I’m considering as well
Do you guys feel any differently if the switch is from biglaw to Big 4 WNT specifically?
no, big 4 sucks period
