As a non-white male, how often have you seen other groups being the face of your firm? These include LinkedIn posts, conference panels, event facilitators, hosts and so on.

This bowl is full of DEI haters so this was always going to go poorly.

But as an American born Desi, this is an interesting question of when representation would ‘count’ on the surface but doesn’t feel like it. Plenty of Desi leaders at the firm and are often speaking, etc. but very rarely are they American born/been in the States since early childhood.

Obviously better than never seeing Desis in leadership, but there’s a big difference in our stories and the challenges we face.

So DEI is only about quotas?

Who cares. Get a life. Theres a beautiful world out there and you’re here thinking about whether other people with the same skin tone and race as you are getting their pictures put on a LinkedIn post? That’s the saddest thing I’ve read this week.

Idk, not something I give one iota of thought to in my free time

D has plenty of non-white people in leadership positions. I’d say there is overrepresentation of some groups when compared to national averages.

Gee, I wonder which is over represented? 🤣

What's the point of this question

like

Majority of people in Fishbowl are white males so they won’t relate to your posts.

And honestly, I’m a minority women and I haven’t seen any of these programs or initiatives work well nor have I cared for these kind of initiatives - it creates more problems for me because a lot of white men rant (some, not all - have had some great white male sponsors in my career) that the only reason women are in leadership positions and advertised on LinkedIn are because of DEI initiatives while I’m worked my way up in my field just like every other person.

If you’re competent, you should get promoted and follow the same route.

like

It's not just the White man who has a grievance with women who benefit from DEI initiatives. At least in my experience, the grumbling gets around equally among the different groups. At least these programmes have achieved some measure of equity, albeit, probably not the best for building morale.

Go work at a WITCH, this won’t be an issue, lol.

No dei program - so this isn’t a hint that’s tracked or factored in anymore. It was all for ‘show’ anyway.

I completely understood where you’re coming from with this question. It’s quite annoying to walk into a meeting room with executives and see white men at the helm like 70-80% of the time. Which is most likely the person they use in all their branding without any consideration of who else is also doing the work. People here who say that racism and all the other awful things don’t exist because it’s a different time are clearly white! All this crap is still very real, they just don’t feel it!

like

I have no idea where OP is coming from or where you are coming from. The level of entitlement that both of you have to think that your thoughts as junior employees should dictate the gender and ethnic makeup of a company’s board is completely ridiculous.

All the time.

All the time, in fact I’ve started to see stronger in-group bias among leaders of Indian descent than there ever has been among white males. Though oft vilified it seems white males are actually the only ones visibly trying to promote others from different groups (demographics, gender), many times it’s not for the right reason (merit) but rather optics- however it refutes what seems to be your central grievance.

like

EXACTLY. Nobody in the history of the world has been more inclusive than the white man.

EDI is only upto Manager designation. Then it stops, there is always a white sky above

Victim mentality. As a female who has been in IT for 30 years I have experienced many negative experiences, due to the fact I was a woman. I am not a victim and continue on with what I need to do and accept it. Really immature question, learn your job, work on communication skills, problem solving, critical thinking and focus on improving your skill and mindset. You may be the face of your firm in the future. Improve your mindset and victim mentality - I believe it will help.

like

All I see is pressure to round up for non-white makes at every stage — recruiting, performance evals, and promotion.

likesmart

I was shocked (maybe naively) when I participated in my old firm’s campus interview process and was instructed to recommend an offer if a female candidate was rated a 3 (out of 5) while male candidates needed a rating of 4 or 5 for us to recommend making an offer. The reason being that women are/were underrepresented in technology.

like

Please don’t ask others to waste time on a inane thought experiment just because you did. Do yourself a favor, ditch the victim mentality and focus on building skills and contributing at work in ways that increase your market value.

As someone who runs 50+ websites for clients, what I've noticed is a lot of performative diversity on websites in the past. Lately, however, a lot of clients have been swapping out the black and brown faces with white ones. Their argument is that it's not representative of who they are as a company, given how the majority of them are white. What they probably don't see, and as a brown man I can't help but notice is, that the leadership teams are typically white people, while those at the bottom are typically other people. Of course, they're not all the same, and I think it's good that performative diversification is being weeded out, but it does feel like the dominant white want to have their cake and eat it too.

like

One of our core competencies is 'meritocracy' and none of them mention diversity or inclusion. Way more white men in middle/upper management than prior companies. However CEO is not white and neither is my direct boss. Office events are a little stuffy but besides that their system is effective and profitable. Whoever gets results gets rewarded. People who don't get results usually aren't hired in the first place. The few that do slip through.. they get shown the door

In almost 30 years all of the various US companies I have worked for i have had 2 people of color somewhere in my chain of command. My most recent gig was for an Indian based company.

I really don't care as long as they treat me right and address any outlandish "ism's".

Here in fly over country I have a much bigger issue with being treated differently because I don't go to so and so's church or any church for that matter.

I once worked for a major MSP at the time. They were bringing in a new service to our customer. I had used this for several years and was even certified in it. Spoke up and was totally passed over for several individuals who had zero experience with it. Was constantly answering their questions.

Later realized every one that got the option or were in leadership positions there were deacons or held other positions in the head bosses church.

The world is strange. Hire me for my skills treat and pay me the same as others regardless of my race or sex and we will get along just fine. if you don't I will take my skills and go elsewhere and will speak the truth if others ask.

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Question: I have a client who started a restaurant. He leased the land and bought shipping containers where he spent money contracting out to turn them into bars. But nonresidential real estate at 27.5 years doesn’t make sense either as it’s not a brick and mortar building. Curious on others thoughts! TIA
