As much as being able to manage direct reports is important, managing up is also such an important skill to have. What tips or strategies do you have for managing up and tackling that relationship with your direct/skip level managers?

I’ve found that sending a weekly “look-ahead” email to my manager, highlighting next week’s goals, any risks, and where I could use input keeps us both on the same page. I also like to prepare a concise “decision memo” before key meetings: outline the issue, your recommended solution, and any trade-offs. These are great quick strategies workers really well for me.

This is a good one! I'll usually touch base EOW in a less formal way on anything outstanding to look forward on as we head into the following week. Do you do this on top of any statuses that you have with your manager/team?

Something important is to try to put yourself in the position of your manager and think about their priorities. In other words, come to them with things they're likely to care about and make pertinent suggestions. If they're not too concerned with details, don't burden them with granular matters. It's also important to anticipate their needs, it's better to keep them informed so they aren't chasing you for updates.

Yea I definitely try to do this. I usually always come to the table with things that I've tried and done already and try to present as much context as possible so they have all the information needed to help me move forward with whatever I need from them

Does anyone have a preferred car service company? I am looking for a service that can consistently provide traveler alerts such as when car has arrived, passenger is on board, trip competed, etc. across US cities. I have found a company that will do this when I book travel in NYC, but when my Professionals arrive in their destination cities the affiliates do not offer this same feature. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Hi all
I started out as a graphic designer. Worked for about 4yrs in different roles. Then i started a digital design role for 2 yrs and then made my transition into ux. i have been in a ux role for 5 years. But i want to steer my career towards something more creative. Like in 5-10 years I wouldn’t want to be a specialist or a ux director. I d like to be an art director or creative director. I love branding & marketing but also product. Would love something that allows me to do both?

Hello friends,
I wanted to share that I am in my first job as ui/ux expert and I am the only ux/ui person in the team. I am expected to take care of entire research and design of the product. It becomes very overwhelming as the product that I am working on is in a early phase and I am expected to think about ui as well as ux and also design entire app on my own. There is no user interview or user testing happening as my project manager thinks it can be done after product is launched. Please help!

If you see an open job posting at a company you want to work for, what steps do you take to apply? I’ve been told that cold applying and making no contacts is usually not going to lead to anything, and that’s been true in my experience. But should I reach out to someone first? Should i apply and then email someone? In HR? Or someone who’d be directly supervising me? Or someone at my level? And what should i say? Thanks!
