I just thought it was a Richard Scary type thing. I personally don’t think it’s derogatory but more of a inspiration thing. Or if you want to get nasty, full on rip off.
It might be a stretch to be considered a performing animal. brown skin girl (btw, awesome complexion, skills, outfit) = brown bear=black people are animals. Perhaps I’m missing something. It didn’t feel like a minstrel or anything like that.
It would be one thing if it was a stereotypical Chinese dressed yellow canary with Chinese accented English.
It’s another to be just absurd and irreverent.
This is not a coincidence. OUMI (skater) went viral on a post where she’s skating wearing that exact item in June. Her video has gotten close to has 5million impressions between her original post and the re-posts from other accounts. It was reposted by Vogue, Buzzfeed, etc. You can watch the original video here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CBwJa4rqLEh/?igshid=tr34v2ztimp4
This Black young woman is having a beautiful and powerful moment of recognition because of her talent. If you visit her Instagram account you’ll see she posts fan art constantly and shares videos of people who got inspired by her and are learning how to skate. What is extremely upsetting is that there was a creative team who thought it would be so funny to make a joke out of her based on the video that went viral. They basically made a caricature of her just to tell a joke. They could have told any other joke a million different ways, but they chose to make fun of a Black young woman in a moment where the social discourse about systemic racism is extremely sensitive. It feels tone deaf and gratuitous.
This is a link where you can watch Little Caesar’s commercial. Watch both videos and then tell me again it’s a coincidence. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDJnOnrjaJP/?igshid=w9ugwgfol0sc
I’m not saying this is overtly racist. I’m saying it’s very insensitive and extremely unnecessary.
I’m curious. If you weren’t aware of this skater, would you have drawn your conclusion of it being insensitive? The bear isn’t a known, well trodden stereotype. So I’m not sure even the most woke of us would have seen it as anything insensitive. What conclusion would you make if you were to find out the creative team didn’t have a clue about this young woman? What if you assumed positive, or at least not negative, intent. How would this change your response?
Just a coincidence. Chill.
Yeah, agreeing with everyone else. Maybe you have a mental library of every time a black person in yellow clothing wears roller skates. Not sure that anyone else does.
A shame because if I was on the team, I... would not have even known.
Yes, i agree with above posters. Nothing to be upset about here. Coincidence or perhaps she was even the inspiration. Can you explain more what is upsetting to you?
This is a reach.
I can imagine the video was in their wardrobe brief, and that should have definitely raised eyebrows, but in the end i think the executions are completely different. The music, performances, tone, skating movements were all unique to each video. People can have the same idea (skating in yellow outfit) but if they are executed differently there is no infringement.
