I think it can vary greatly. For example as a cinematographer. Between docs, MV, commercials, TV and features. Relative budgets. Hourly can be $35- $500 per hour. When you start out you often make sacrifices to establish yourself. I use to get offered high rates upfront. Them competition got worse and they asked your rate. If it was not what they liked they would just move on. So now I ask what they have allocated. If it’s a job I’m passionate about and the rate is low I’ll do it. If it’s lame I seek a higher rate. For you. Build the portfolio and reel. Market to students. Established pros and which ever market you want to work in. Your portfolio should have the work you want to do. You’ll most likely do some freebies for the experience. So what you can to retain the rights to the art. You can leverage that later for products and such. Like say you designed R2D2 for free. But kept the rights. The t shirt sales alone would garner a retirement
If you’re looking to work in California, I’d suggest you look into the animation guild website for the minimum wages for both character and storyboard artists. From what I’ve seen in past job postings (I too am looking for work in animation) designers can make around $50 usd per hour. This amount varies by studio and if they are part of the union as well. Negotiations are about to start up again, though, so keep an eye out for the changes the animation guild announces.
How do I apply
It depends on where you are working. LA or NY are higher wages than Nebraska.
For my first 3 years as a character designer, I was making $15-20 an hour (this is outside LA). It will vary from studio to studio, as well as project to project. As others have said, beef up your portfolio — especially character turnarounds
Post industry (CG/VFX/Animation) 2D or 3D, are using day rates and not hourly. We never post the rate in a mass job posting as first calls to out to artists that are in databases and rosters. Interviews happen to chat and review reel to see if the need matches the artist capability. Generally the proficiency of the artist dictates which rate bracket they are in and they are pretty steady from studio to studio until some people level up. This is all as freelancers. $20/hour for an 8 hour day is very very low, and OT is trickier than ever. I work with studios and artists globally, so the info is encompassing the 3 major US hubs.
