Asked my firm if I could move to a different office as my wife’s job is being eliminated a she won’t be able to get another one in her field in our current market. Requested to move to an office in a different state, but where my PG doesn’t have partners/associates. Would need to fly back frequently as our clients demand in person meetings only.

Was told the answer coming back in a few days would likely be no, so we are looking into going long distance but there would be no set end date.

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?
