At companies that don't sell software, architects do everything from design to delivery. The role separation you see at FAANG, AWS or Google doesn't exist. If your org calls you an engineer but you're making design decisions, you're being underpaid for architect work.

What kind of title and work mismatch do you run into?

I think what I see is a lot of times companies dump more work on you with no pay raise or title change. I think it is important to recognize when that is happening because it might be time to look for something else. We shouldn't have to wear 87 hats and not be compensated for each of them.

I don't know about that, I think that some exposure to different parts of how the business work can also mean growth. One does not become architect from one day to another, if you approach it by chance and find that you're good at it and you like it, it might mean that you want to pursue that path and you start having a record of instances where it was a fit for you. I think it also exposes you to cross contamination, putting yourself in others shoes and understanding the business needs from multiple perspectives. I usually take on these tasks gladly if they are critical to the business. One can always reprioritise or delegate if not.

I’ve noticed engineers being called “full stack” while doing system-level design. The title doesn’t always reflect the scope of impact.

Getting worried about hours. Last year I was really low (first year associate), I’ve had really good reviews so far and no negative feedback. This month was slow too (about 95), and I really don’t understand why I can’t get work? I’ve asked different partners, including the heads of my groups, but it hasn’t really materialized anything. Should I consider lateraling?

Is there any advantage to telling a company you are interested in working for in the future where you decided to accept an offer from? Or does it not matter? I accepted an offer a week ago with a great company (Company A) that for this season in my life seems like a great fit and only strengthens what I have to offer company B down the road. Company B just sent me a request for interview and I want to keep the door open with Company B but they were just very late in extending an interview.

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

When you recruiters say at the end of a 15 min call.
“I will get back to you by the end of this week” does that really mean “your not right for this position”? Because this whole thing is a waste of time. I’ve did these calls with 3 recruiters and is yet to hear back from someone. Today would be the 4th recruiter that I’ve spoken to. Does this practice annoy you guys just as much as it does us? My dream career is to be a technical recruiter but this whole thing is discouraging.
