I think what I see is a lot of times companies dump more work on you with no pay raise or title change. I think it is important to recognize when that is happening because it might be time to look for something else. We shouldn't have to wear 87 hats and not be compensated for each of them.
I don't know about that, I think that some exposure to different parts of how the business work can also mean growth. One does not become architect from one day to another, if you approach it by chance and find that you're good at it and you like it, it might mean that you want to pursue that path and you start having a record of instances where it was a fit for you. I think it also exposes you to cross contamination, putting yourself in others shoes and understanding the business needs from multiple perspectives. I usually take on these tasks gladly if they are critical to the business. One can always reprioritise or delegate if not.
I’ve noticed engineers being called “full stack” while doing system-level design. The title doesn’t always reflect the scope of impact.
