Getting worried about hours. Last year I was really low (first year associate), I’ve had really good reviews so far and no negative feedback. This month was slow too (about 95), and I really don’t understand why I can’t get work? I’ve asked different partners, including the heads of my groups, but it hasn’t really materialized anything. Should I consider lateraling?

January is a historically slow month.

In the event you’re in restructuring…every single firm is troublingly slow right now. If you’re not in restructuring, you’re getting good reviews and have done everything you can. Without knowing the practice area, it’s hard to provide advice on whether your industry is slow or if it’s just your firm/group (or something else).

Restructuring is constantly going from insane to dead to insane. Enjoy the slow periods when they come.

What practice area? Are others at your level busy?

Lol better to be slow with good reviews. Would you rather be crushed with work, getting shit from partners, and getting “bad” reviews due to relatively trivial things occurring (e.g. not turning in absolutely perfect work, like forgetting a comma or pin cite) due to artificial deadlines and insane work amounts. All this to say, enjoy the slow time.

Having very similar issues my friend

How low were you last year?

About 1400, corporate group

Do you have any formal or informal mentors that you can ask for advice or feedback? If you don’t work for any of them directly, they can ask other partners you’ve worked with for feedback on your work. If you’re really this slow when everyone else is busy then it’s something I’d look into.

On the other hand, you could just ride this slow wave as far as it goes and enjoy it.

Everyone in this bowl has been a tremendous help in this process. I’ve never been good at saving, so this is a big milestone for me. Thank you again to everyone who gives out advice in the bowl, it is truly invaluable. Happy NYE! ❤️

My partner lateraled as a senior associate (now a 7th year) and hasn't yet received clear direction on ascension to partnership. Curious what your firms have told you about pathways to partnership? Are you eligible to be made partner as a 9th year? What factors go into consideration? Are you expected to generate business before you achieve partner? How much?

So, I'm happy at my current job and have been there about 18 months. Our pay is probably 15% below market (AmLaw 100) but so are our billable requirements. An interview for another firm kind of fell into my lap, and I'm debating whether to take it just for the sake of seeing what market really is. Is there something shady about interviewing somewhere you're not totally committed to accepting an offer from?

Is it okay that I’ve been a slow junior as we’re hours away from closing? I’m trying to be proactive and available to cross things off the list but I’m SLOW: takes me long enough that they do it themselves (even though this wasn’t an issue earlier in the deal) and even on quick tasks or emails, they respond to it before I can click send. There’s also so much about closing that I don’t understand and I feel like I’m bothering the higher-ups on the team whenever I ask. *end anxiety post*

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.
