At the cost of sounding dramatic, how do you move on from the MBA dream? All I ever wanted and worked for the past 3 years was this goal. Worked my ass off for a GRE score and then paid thousands to MBA consultant. Got rejected by every school I applied to and it has not only costed me my self esteem but I feel a burnout that is impacting my current job, my personal life.

Take it as redirection. My MBA admission journey was multiple years and now at a T10 wondering if it was actually worth it.

1. First attempt (Class of 2023): couldn’t get the test score I wanted after hundreds of hours of study so didn’t apply for my target year. Turned out well because I got an opportunity to move aboard and make way more money
2. Second attempt (Class of 2024): rejected from 4 schools due to mediocre test score and GPA. Turned out well because I met my now wife, got to live and explore the expat country longer than planned, and my TC increased to 250k+ (without getting into details got a ton of retention bonuses)
3. Third attempt (Class of 2026): got into a T10 but paying for it with 6-figure loans and high interest rates.

Between all those attempts I spent hundreds of hours on test prep, essays and alternative transcript. I also spent heaps of money on GMAT tutoring, admissions fees, and applicantlab.

Now at school, recruiting is good for IB and consulting but subpar for everything else. I’ve made tons of great friends (some I’d say lifelong) and learned some new things but I feel like the curriculum has not kept up with the real world. Very few of us are going to be well positioned for the GenAI economy. I find that recruiters cater to the lowest common denominator and assume that all MBA students were making sub 120k and don’t know business. Feel like it’s a step back to go back to recruiting for IC roles. If you’re in a management position already (and like your industry) I’d strongly consider foregoing an MBA unless it’s HBS/GSB. If you really want the degree and network then do a good executive or PT program down the line.

Experience trumps all now. Hopefully I’m proven wrong and the network pays dividends long term. I’m probably overindexing on the fact that I’m now heavily in debt, used to have high income, and the job market is rough. But I really only think a FTMBA only makes sense if you have the GI bill, sponsorship, scholarship, or wealthy parents that are covering it.

I know someone who was rejected four times before being accepted into my b school class. Claimed to have had the lowest GPA in school history

So persistence

Also there’s a lot of schools besides H/S and the M7 isn’t the end all be all some here think it is. No one really cares if you went to Columbia or Dartmouth for example so considering broadening your targets

This is very true. I’m at a T10 and interned with folks from HBS, Wharton, and other M7’s last summer.

Literally nobody cares.

I completely understand where you're coming from. The MBA application process is rough and third to medical school and potentially law school applications in difficulty, so you want there to be payoff.

For what it's worth, consider this rejection to be redirection or even protection. You still have a job where you can grow and reapply. You have more chances to reapply as a stronger candidate. The first time to do anything is always the hardest, but now you'll be well prepared and know what to expect because you've already done most of the work.

I see this because I'm at a T15, and recruiting is not going well for many people due to the market, even those who landed Amazon PM roles last summer, and the market will get worse. Many of us are disillusioned by the MBA dream. We wish we had jobs, but now many will have resume gaps and struggling to pay student loans after graduating, which in the long run looks worse than waiting to begin an MBA.

You're in a good place for the long run. You can continue working and growing to be more competitive for your dream MBA internship and post-MBA job, and save money for a true MBA dream. I believe in you. :)

Would MBA be any good for me especially looking at strategy side?
I don’t want to spend $200K and would probably go online MBA in a mid tier school. Are those any good?
