B4 partner for ~3 yrs, close to 1M in comp. Recruiters approached for MD role at A&M, and P role at McK. No comp discussions yet with either recruiter. Have a couple of q.s:
1. How is the teaming at A&M and at McK? My client relationships may not immediately yield a book of business, however, have a skillset to market with unique PoVs and revenue potential to McK / A&M client base with teaming.
2. What is the comp like at this level?

Thank you!

If you’re making close to $1m where you are and you feel your trajectory is solid, then I’d be sticking to what you know.

If you don’t have 15 years left in you workwise, don’t sweat it. Enjoy the current. 😃😃😃. Unless McK and AM can make you famous (which they cannot) why bother. (Wisely provocative response) Then again, make $10 million at McK & come back here in 2035 & let us know how that extra bedroom in Manhattan is worth it.

You may find major differences at MBB that would make success difficult even with the greatest skill set.

As a highly successful lateral at BCG this is BS. There are lots of very very successful laterals. “Mental resistance to the model” is basically code for some practice areas are territorial and don’t team well with newcomers. Many do team well and have great lateral hires.

Can’t speak to McKinsey or A&M but make sure there is a need for your background and you won’t be 4th on the depth chart for a topic. That’s when the bias for the home team really hurts.

If you are making $1M a year, why take a chance at failing somewhere else? Seems to be more downside potential than upside gain.

Your comp is directly tied to revenue sold and delivered.

1. So, teaming compared to B4 is less. Only people that have to be involved (relationship or capability) are involved.

2. $1m would be low end of range for MD. The range is wide. $2m+ is very common. There is also equity which historically grows at a very high rate.

If you can consistently sell your own work from your own relationships, A&M is a no brainer from a comp perspective. If you are heavily reliant on referrals from relationships that are not yours, you are likely better off with the stability of B4.

What’s your skill set? A&M is based on a bunch of different levers but the comp is majority variable once you get passed your guarantee

Based on the conversations I've had:
1) if you are a rainmaker, sky is the limit at A&M
2) coming from outside MBB at the Partner level is rough as there is a stigma and the culture is different

It doesn't sound like you are confident in being a rainmaker, and you said you don't have a long trajectory left before retirement, but you make close to $1M now; I would stay where you are.

Im a 3yr partner, all depends on individual and firm performance but my best guess for this year is 1.2mln for me. I think growth continues so once youre 6-7 year p in the us should exceed 2mln if high performing. If you make sp start is 2.5 and high performers exceed 5mln.

In all honesty, I haven’t seen a single successful Partner hire in my entire tenure at McK. Even those who brought clients with them struggled to go to Sr Partner level…too many tribes that are hard to penetrate, unless you are a mega rainmaker. A&M I don’t know, but they are famous for their “eat what you kill” culture, so if you don’t bring business, most probably better to stay away. Tbh you have a very high comp for a y3 B4 partner, so it doesn’t make any sense to move, especially if you’re more advanced as age.

A lot of pessimistic views here. My guess is that you’re entertaining these discussions because you’re seeking something different. My two cents, you’ll do great wherever you go if you believe in yourself. Life is short…go explore. It may turn out to be the best decision you ever made. Consulting gigs are a dime a dozen for talented folks if you want to pivot back.

Ok. This is one approach. I definitely agree but also I play it safe ….

The transition from big 4 to MBB is atleast 3x harder than you would think. Its not even the subject matter or expertise, its the day to day operations. I had a terrible year 1, slowly finding my mojo now in year 2.

I am considering an offer for an AE role (UK-LDN) where the base is £42k & OTE is £70k. The Regional GM has verbally promised to move it up to £50k base if I perform well during the probationary period, but I can’t have it in writing on the contract. I’ve tried to counter offer but they said I’m currently maxing the salary band (L4). This role is exciting as I’d be the first UK employee, doing the full sales cycle & more but I had the same base and ote as an SDR. Is it too low? Do I take it?

Let's say I can't get a product or marketing job in tech, but I could get in via sales or customer success. Does working in those roles pigeonhole you, or is it easy to switch later? If you take a job as a customer success mgr for ads, or as a partnership mgr for learning solutions for industry X, are you going to get stuck in those products (ads, learning solutions), roles (CS, sales/partnerships), or target industry (X)?
