Bain & Company Hello, I received an offer as a Senior Practice Manager at Bain. The profit sharing range is 0-12% in the offer letter. Is it typical to receive the midpoint (6%)? Actually super different. Couple quick hits:
- You mostly staff yourself at BCG; you work with a staffer at Bain. This means no pressure to network and find work yourself at Bain (utilization is not a KPI), but also means you might not always get what you want.
- You staff regionally at BCG; you staff locally at Bain. So case selection might be broader at BCG, but so is competition to be staffed (and if you align with the case mix at your local Bain office, you can almost guarantee to always be staffed in your preferred industry anyway).
- As a result, you travel more often than not at BCG; you mostly don’t travel at Bain
- BCG staffs smaller teams than Bain, and is less hierarchical (at BCG you report to PL directly; at Bain you typically report to a senior consultant). So you get more responsibility earlier at BCG, but you get more mentorship at Bain, and the opportunity to supervise much earlier (I.e., get a supervisee at 1-2 years of experience instead of 4).
- BCG is better at government, healthcare, and tech implementation work for non-tech clients. Bain is better at PE, and general strategy work (including tech clients).
- as a result, there’s a higher chance you’d do strategy work at Bain compared to BCG (just based on case mix)
- you promote faster at BCG (4 years to PL instead of 5 at Bain) but you’re more likely to be counseled out earlier. Bain retention for junior team is much higher. The BCG pay raise at 21 months Associate tenure is better than what Bain gives.
